spare tire mount

Not a major issue, just curious..

how in the HELL do you mount the spare tire under a '63 c-10
I can't get the rack to work.

I wanted to go all factory, but, now I know why my dad welded a plate on the inside of the bed to mount the spare too... he got tired of crawling around on the ground taking the spare off and on...

I have no idea (my spare is gone) but do you think you could use a spare tire assembly off a newer truck (1990 something). The ones that were held up by a chain and could be lowered by turning a crank with the lug wrench? If you could it wouldn't be factory, but it would keep you off the wet ground...

i thought about that too. even get the one that cranks the tire down to the ground

Yeah, why not make things a little easier on yourself? Having a blowout is bad enough without having to wrestle a spare tire out from under your truck for half an hour with cars flying by.

Just reading some of the threads and I know this is a bit older, but we replaced the gas tank in our '66, and put it in the spare tire area. I have the original spare tire holder and it was not hard to remove either the spare or the holder. This one is just a piece of metal about two foot (??) long with a large bolt on each end. The arm bolts diagonally from front drivers side of truck to the rear passenger side of truck to the frame. There is a large type nut on the rear bolt that if is tightened will lift the arm, squeezing the spare tire to the undercarriage of the truck. Loosen the nut on that bolt and the arm releases tension which allows you to remove the spare. There was some rust on the bolt, so get passed that and it worked fine. Just my two cents.
