TH350/stall

Anybody have any advice on installing a stall into a
TH350 tranny with shift kit and a mildly built 327 for my
'48? What size stall for city driving and highway trips ? the rear is a 10 bolt w/388's or something like that, came out of a '79 cutlass A/T car.
Do I need anything over 3000 or should I go 2200? This is my first time with A/T and not shure what to expect. This truck will be DRIVEN as much as possible , so I don't want to burn the tranny up or hurt the motor.

What is a "stall" into a th350 tranny? Never heard of the term before.

It's a torque converter w/RPM stall.
almost like having a wheel lock for racing.
Your motor has to reach a certain RPM before the stall converter will allow the tranny to lock up and let the wheels turn.

Just the shirt kit should be enough, you state it will be a daily driver or was it a daily racer.

Not really "Daily" but no trailer queen either.
Cruze in's and trips up to 400 miles one way.

Stall speed depends mostly on how much cam you run in the engine. I have a 10:1 350 with a 488/510 lift 230/240 Dur. cam and 411 gears in the back with a 350 Trans. I run a 2500 stall and am quite happy with it. If you have less cam with 380? gears you might want to try a 1900 stall. If your cam is real mild like a RV cam then a stock converter will probably be OK. You might want to check with your cam MFG. and tell them what cam you have and see what they recommend......Big Tim

Stick in the low 2000s and you will be ok. If you go too high, you might have to rev it up to get it going or manual shift it if you don't have the extra power. Stock is around 1500 ish, I need a 2000-2200 for mine to get it in the power band.

High Stall Torque Converters

Hot Rodders love these things for launching but for average use and highways / freeways , you don't want too high .

We use high stall torque converters on the L.A.P.D. black & whites , they go through them like mad , I just ordered a bunch more this morning .

I went ahead and ordered a stall from www.doughebert.com. Thats where I ordered my cam an lifters from.
It was a 2200 to 2600 rpm. With the cam and the high rear end gears(308s) I think this will do ok for me. I couldn't decide on the 2800/3000 or the one I ordered so I guess i'll c .

I had a set of gears like you have when I first put my 61 on the road. With the same stall speed as you and the cam I described in my earlier post I couldn't get my truck to hardly get out of it's tracks and the gas mileage was horrible. I think the problem was not enough HP. to run those gears. So I went to a 411 gear with a 29" tall tire. My mileage doubled and My truck now has all the power I could ask for. With that much stall speed and a 308 gear you will be doing 70 before that torque converter completely locks up. Check your tire size and do the calculations to determine which gear you want to run cause that's probably where you are headed next......Big Tim
