Hey anybody have a great idea for a catch can on your truck? Have any pics?
Are these cans to recirculate or just to catch the overflow when she get's too hot.:) I know how they work on a closed system but how about our trucks where you put water(anti-freeze) whatever in when its low by way of the radiator.
Can a catch can,bottle,or bucket help?

The original GM accessory overflow tank for the 1947-1955 GM trucks was a dealer installed option.

What we call puke cans the factory called expansion tanks. They don't work well on old non-pressurized systems because a vacuum is needed to pull the overflow back up the overflow tube into the radiator and the old non-pressure cap usually weren't air tight. Any container will work but the tube needs to run nearly to the bottom. A benefit many don't know about is the air trapped in the coolant will be dispelled in the puke can and pure liquid is left behind. Liquid in contact with metal pulls out more heat than air to metal.

Similar, but different

I couldn't get myself to spring for a $100+ for an original expansion tank, so I won this one on eBay for under $25 including shipping. It's mounted per the instructions that Ken forwarded. Maybe one day I will find an old one for a reasonable price, but until then it's working just fine. :cool:

I have a can that looks like that and I thought I would buy the sticker for the front of it and clone it.

Coolant Puke Tanks

These work very well on your oldie , you just must needs follow the instructions and mount it up high on the firewall like it shows in the instructions .

Many vendors sell very nice re-pops that look so close to original , you can't hardly tell it's not a $pendy N.O.S. one .

I just put a cheese ball plastic one on my firewall and it works fine .

I use a cheap plastic puke can, probably just like the one like Nate uses. Doesn't look stock, but there is a lot of "not stock" on my daily driver truck.

Given that Nate and I are both Blues fans, Martinius has made reference to one of my favorite Blues songs and today is Monday, maybe we should start a survey of best rendition of "Stormy Monday". I really like the original T-Bone Walker version, but the one in the MP3 player in my truck is Bobby Bland's 1962 rendition.

My overflow tank was completely rotted out, so no "cleaning up". I just replaced with an $8.95 universal tank from O'Reilly. I'm going for close, as I don't have the pocketbook for perfect restoration. 98% of the people who look at the truck will not know that the plastic tank did not belong there in 1949!

If I ever find an original for cheap, then I may replace. But works great for the time being of keeping the coolant from puking out of the radiator.
 
Not quite the blues
