difference between axles

what is the difference between a 1941 thru 1950 front axle and a 1951 thru 1959 front axle?

for the record there is a 5 lug disc brake kit for sale but it is for a 49-50 1/2 ton. The axle in my 52 3/4 ton is a 52 1/2 axle. Would the bearings be the only difference between the kits for 52-59? If so anyone have the specs. I could easily get the correct bearings at a local bearings & drives shop.

The vendor the guy got the kit from has two separate kits listed, one for 41-50 and another for 51-59. Anyone know what the difference would be?

Axles

Front wheel bearings fit 41-59 the ND part numbers #909052 inner and #909067 outer.
The front inner cup 2 7/8 OD - 2 21/64 ID # 909602
cone 1 7/8 OD - 1 9/32 ID # 909552
outer cup 2 3/16 OD - 1 5/8 ID # 909601
cone 1 1/32 OD - 3/4 ID # 909501

Front axle fits 41-55 1st ser cast # 3656872 33 1/4 offset.

Thanks, sounds like it should work. I posted this on stovebolt.com and was told that one difference is that the top mounting bolts on the spindle changed to 1/2 in 51, was 7/16, so I would just need to enlarge the holes on the bracket.

So far there is a person infront of me half way interested in the kit, but I figured I would continue to ask question incase he doesn't take it and so others could know what interchanges

Changing the subject a little, how do you like the Clifford set-up with the H.E.I. distributor?
My truck also has the '54 235, and was looking a that set-up after my ride this last week-end.

So far so good. My truck is not on the road yet and is currently not mobile at all (front is up on blocks for power steering and disc brake upgrade) but it runs and revs really nice. Mounted on top is a Holley 390cfm carb which is what clifford recommends. I also did as they recommended and changed out the main jets and discharge nozzle and that seemed to help alot. The H.E.I. distributor is another mod I was very happy with. It is a distributor out of a GM 250 Inline 6 that I modded to work in the 235. I think it complement the intake and exhaust upgrades very well.

If you go this route it might be better to look into just using a 2bbl carb instead of the 4. Most say it a bit of a waste to mount a 4 as the secondaries may never open. I went with the 4bbl because I got the intake and exhaust used for a really good price and the 4bbl adapter was already on the intake. If it wasn't I probably would have gone with a 2bbl carb.
 
yeah the price is a bit steep, I got lucky and found the intake, 4bbl mounting plate and tube headers all for $500 shipped free on another forum. They were used once and then taken off the engine. The carb I bought from summit for $350. The distributor was the cheapest mod of all, $20 from the local salvage yard and $5 for a split clamp from I believe mcmaster carr.

for the pedal I went with a lokar floor mounted cable gas pedel and lokar cable.

There is a write up about using the mechanical linkage with a 4bbl carb. Let me see if I can find it.

Hey Chris, Do you have a size description like i.d and o.d or a part number for that split clamp. It wasn't listed in the article you posted.:(

I tryed finding the invoice but can't seem to locate it. All I know is the outer diameter is 1-3/4", the width is 1/2" and the inner diameter is either 15/16" or 1". 6436K31 or 6436K18

Hotter Sparks

Are easy , just toss out the originl coil and replace with a good quality epoxy filled one of a Bosch Blue Coil , available in 6 or 12 volt versions from any VW partshaus .

Be sure to run a .035" gap , & NEVER trust spark plugs to be properly gapped from the box ! .

HEI is very good yes but not really necessary for these oldies . then you can run a .050" gap .
