ignition wiring

I purchased an ignition switch from classic parts. I switched my starter to a key start instead of a foot starter. The motor will turn over but not start until the key returns to the run position. I do not have a solenoid on the truck, Do I need one? If so what solenoid do I need and how do you wire it?
