I'm looking at a 1954 3600 1 ton that has no engine. The current owner has the original 4 speed transmission but doesn't have the drive shaft. Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to buy one? I've tried OldChevyTrucks.com but they don't have one. Is there another drive shaft I could use?

    thanks,
    Joe

No such thing as a 3600 1 ton truck.

The 3600 trucks are 3/4 ton trucks.

The 3800 trucks are the 1 ton trucks.

The 3/4 ton {3600} drive shaft is a 2 piece unit with a carrier bearing in the middle .
This unit is enclosed from the transmission to the carrier bearing & then it is "open" from the carrier bearing to the rear end.

The 1 ton {3800} drive shaft is a 2 piece fully "open" unit with a carrier bearing in the middle & it is about a foot longer than the 3/4 ton drive shaft.

You will need to figure out the correct tonnage of your truck before you will be able to locate the correct parts. Many times the hood gets switch out & the incorrect numbered emblems are on the truck.

If the transmission in your truck is actually original to the truck & has the enclosed type u-joint set up..... it is a 3/4 ton...... if the u-joint on the transmission is the open type .... it is a 1 ton.

Measuring from the U-joint of the transmission to the u-joint of the rear end will tell us if you have a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Wheelbase measurement will also be required.

We have a few of both the 3600 & 3800 drive shafts that are complete but, they are buried under a pile of other parts.

This is the best picture I can get right now.

    PM us for more info.

DeadZone, thank you for the response. I've written to the seller and asked him to check the specifics on the truck. Sorry about the post here I'm not sure how to PM you. I'll let you know what he has as soon as he writes back.

    JoeR,

Have the guy give you the #'s off the plate on the door so they can be checked to see what the truck is.

Thanks ccharr. The owner is checking. And will get the info to me. I've been looking at photos and it looks like the 1 ton trucks are duallys. This one has a single wheel in the rear, so I'm thinking it's a 3/4 ton.

    thank for all your help.

    JoeR,

My truck is a 3804 with 9ft. bed which is a 1 ton, single rear wheels not duals.

Talk about an education. You guys are great. The guy told me that the original trans that he has is a closed unit. So from what Dead Zone is saying this would definitely be a 3/4 ton. Unfortunately the rear part of the shaft is bent. So I guess I'll be buying one of those driveshafts from Dead Zone :) Now I just have to make arrangements to get the thing down here from where it is. Looks like it needs a bed wood kit, with the bed strips and angle strips. It also needs some interior work. But, hey, why else buy one of these if not to work on it. I think I've found a rebult 235 near me so that helps. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks again.
