I have a 50 gmc and i can't get the gas gauge to work right. i put in an 50 ohm resister because of the 12 volt system. I turn the key on and it jumps to full really quick and then it drops down to where i think it should be . And then some times it jumps to full and doesn't move. But i got to go down once by cracking the engine over really quick. And then it lowered. What do u guys think should I buy a resister from classic parts and try that one. I just don't know what to do.

    Jason,
Just a stab here but do you have the sending unit well grounded?

Jason, i think gater nailed this one. if you'll go to www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com and go to their tech tips, they have some good info on gas gauge problems.

    Not stupid, more experienced!

Ain't it funny how electricity works, and some times doesn't! Glad it worked out for you!

PS: The more one person experiences, the more we all gain! Thanks!

Jason, don't feel ashame on anything like that. I could write a very large novel with the mistakes I have made working on cars over the last 28 years. Good thing is with this group is you get a lot of help and also is fun while we all learn. Working on cars/trucks is always a learning experience. That's what makes it so much fun.

The way that I look at it is you may feel stupid for a moment, but I can guaruntee you won't make the same mistake again. Who knows somebody will probably do the same thing and post on here and then you get to be the hero when you answer his question. Isn't that how we know all the answers anyway, by past experiences.

All these years later and still make the boo-boo from time to time .

Especially 'lectrickery ~ that seems to stump most mechanics , I find it sorta fun .
