Hi guys-I need some help. I want to move the fuel tank to the rear. What is the easiest or best swap? It will be in a 65 stepside.
few places on the net that sale a gas tank for the rear in the frame rails were the spare tire goes.Got a friend here in Bentonville who has a 66 stepside chevy with a rear mounted gas tank, easy to install.
Dont remember the brand of gas tank my friend used on his 66 but few places on the internet that do sale them and a fuel cell would work great too.
Thats shows you the best way to install the gas tank between the frame rails from that web site DVALs showing doesnt look like it cost alot either thats what I like all about saving money. Thanks for looking that up DVal.
The 'easiest' may be this bolted inside your box behind cab http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...STRK:MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=140160109150&rd=1
a hot rod idea is to do a moon eyes style keg tank in the bed i found em on ebay or direct for a company called www.coyote-gear.com
That was the tank that was "removed" for the tank on Van Pershing's pages. At 21 gallons it hung way too low for the owner and it is a poly tank, not steel. Val As for Bed mounted tanks, to each his own, but I'm not a huge fan of them. It's a safety thing visualizing a large fuel tank being catapulted out of a truck bed in a wreck. It's just not my cup-of-tea.
Bolting the tank to the steel instead of the wood bed would eliminate the 'flying tank' principle. Rear under bed would be best but either is much better than the tank inside the cab. I remember a man that burned to death 2 miles from my house with a tank in the cab and I worked with a guy whose daughter burned to death in a car with a rear mount tank after being rear ended and the car flipped and she could not get out..............so there are no guarantees
Been thinking some more. Just my thoughts here.............having been in the Fire Dept and having my own towing service for 8 years.......the majority of wrecks are either head ons or rear enders. Head on it does not matter where the tank is. In a rear ender.....if your tank is in the back where the spare tire should be..it is the first thing to get destroyed., or at least punctured. A fuel cell mounted in the bed behind cab would be safer in a rear collision. Then comes the t-bone scenario. Both are about equal in puncture risk, if behind cab.. gas is closer to you. From the carnage that I have seen in t-bones, fuel tank placement is not much of a factor in sending the victims to meet their maker. It does not help either that the inside of our trucks is all steel, we all should be wearing helmets.........and body armor
Tank Replacement I feel that the Nolimit tank is about as good as it gets... not cheap, I admit. Easiest- not difficult at all and a perfect fit. Best-??? IMO almost anything is better than a tank in the cab with you! http://nolimit.net/prodinfo.asp?number=B-TNK These are also sold for less by Performance Online, I believe. http://www.performanceonline.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=16813&cat=453&page=1
Bought mine from Nolimit 3 or 4 years back... POL tank looks exactly the same and is $50cheaper- it seems. When you get the tank you might also need to buy a fuel sender to match whatever guages you are using. And a filler neck of some sort... mine is "CoolCap".
