Here is my new 66 chevy shortstep and I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to where to get fenders for it? Thanks.
mine came from Classic Parts of America!!! hehe. Hello, I am not new here but I am also not here much. I will be coming by often now seeing all of the good work going on over here. some great trucks !!
Alrighty thanks for your advice, im thinking on ordering a set of aftermarket fenders because finding a pair thats rust free is a rarity but do you know if the holes are lined up or if you have to predrill them? Thanks.
Getting fenders to "line-up" is a time consuming process. I've yet to see all mounting points line up perfectly. They all need to be fitted to some extent. You can help the process by drilling out the holes slightly in an oblong shape to facilitate adjustment. When I say "slightly" that means do not drill out the holes any wider than the washers that will be used. Nothing looks more un-tidey under the hood than holes that show under the bolt/washers. Val
Let me followup on my above post. When you take fenders off, note where the shims are located. Put them in a baggie and mark them so they go back where they came from. To get the front sheetmetal to align you have to start with the DOORS. Get the proper gap at the doors, top, bottom & B pillar. THEN start to mount the front sheetmetal. Everything goes on loosely, ( except the doors, they are cinched down where they need to be.), Radiator support, front facia, and fenders. To get in the ball part for the front fenders, align them with the door and get the gap close. Then check out where the bolt holes are in relation to the holes on the fender. A center punch run from the bottom to mark the fender will get you close enough to where you can see how much, and which way, the fender holes need to be enlarged. Then it's a process of test, adjust, enlarge holes. If you take your time, you will get the best results. Be prepared to move everything around a few times to get it right, but start with the back edge of the fender aligned with the door. A bag of various thickness body shims will be your friend. Val
Dval Is Right, I Just Fitted Two New Steal Fenders From Classic Parts On Mine, Loosen The Front End Up And Take Your Time, You May Have To Do Some Triming And Grinding In The Right Places, Never Take To Much Off, You Can Always Go Back And Trim More Later. It Took Two Hours On One Side And About An Hour On The Other. The Key Is Patiance.
I found a set of rear step side fenders from MAR-K that were steel and 3 inches wider. for them big fat slicks Same price and normal ones KIlroy was here
Before trashing your old front fenders make sure to remove the sheet metal pieces that hold the seals. These do not come with the new fenders. There are good fenders and cheap fenders. I don't know who is who. I have a repaired original that had a rear lower added. It fits nice. I have a new replacement that doesn't fit for crap. I like fiberglass. Again there are good and there are junk. You never have to patch the rust again..
