I fixed it Jim - sorry None the less - I do like the look of your truck. Hopefully you don't mind me copying you... Also, Jim - I noticed that your truck has an antenna. Does yours have the factory radio? Any ideas were to find one? I've seen the replicas on the web but at $600 I'll just enjoy the tappity tap tap of the engine.
So , What's NotTo Like ? About THE best post war truck that helped usher in the most prosperous time in American history ? . If you look at the production numbers , many more standard cab , stripper trucks rolled off the assembly lines and into history , memory (and sadly , the scrapyards) than did the now wildly popular NuView 5 window cab DeLuxe models..... My truck is just an old beater , standard 3 window cab , no heater , built in Oakland , Ca. and stillrunning after 57 years of continuous Commercial Service.... Like I said , what's not to like ? . -Nate
54 cab,53 grille Just had to put my two cents in on this one! My rig has a 54 cab with a 53 or earlier nose.I like the 5 bar grille over the 54.But I also have a Johnny Cash special, 48 frame,79 bed,80 Buick v-6,80 pacer front suspension,67 camaro rear-end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pacer Suspension Poppy ; Where are you at ? I keep trying to tell folks about the superiority of the Pacer front clip but everyone says there's none left....
Climber; If you hunt really hard, you may find a 54 or 55.1 radio somewhere, it likely won't work, it will still cost you $500 then another $500 to send away and have the AM/FM 40 watt per channel good time set-up put inside. My 13 year old has a gizmo (ipod?) he can send a radio signal into the truck with and play all kind of fancy tunes right through the radio speakers. My wife will ride along cause she can listen to her favorites as well. Then ther's the AC system. SWMBO says "you can build it, but if you expect me to ride in it, you better air condition it", another $1000. It's all worth it to have everyone ride happily along. After all, they don't get to drive much. These original radios are hard to find and pricey. I actually bought this truck because it had the radio in it. That was before i realized the G was worth $1,000 more (Zig?), and the corner glass another $1,000. I still like my truck. enjoy. Jim
Hey guys, I hope I didn't come across as taking away from the 3 window trucks when I made the observation about the 5 windows bringing more. I love them all! Besides, rule number one is, "It's your money and your time. Do as you damn well please!" Gater
That's OK, Jim~ You still have a beautiful truck! ...and yes, mines a G with corner glass... CHA~CHING!!!!
Weather in the 70's in December... The Gas tank is done. Inside clean as a whistle and sealed with Red Cote, outside covered in bed liner. Cleaning out the inside of the cab and putting down some more bed liner on the floor. Bumpers and running boards have been media blasted. The bumpers are almost fully painted and the running boards coated with bed liner. Life is good here in Tejas!! Hopefully, I can get it all back together tomorrow so I can drive it to show it off at my monthly meeting with my Land Cruiser buddies. One of them found a deal on an old Washburn guitar that he picked up to trade me for some old Land Cruiser parts I gave him. Life IS good here in Tejas!!
Gator, No offense taken, I was just doin the arithmetic. My truck is like a small land yatch, I have put lots of money into it, but I really enjoy it. If I were worried about the value of my investment, I woud have restored a corvette, or something a bit less eclectic than a near stock 1954 Chevrolet 3100 Pick-up truck. I enjoy the speculative nature with which we kick around $1,000 values. G and corner glass, that's $2,000! 54 radio, another $1,000! Kinda fun. if Zig owned a Chevy, it would probably have some special quality to make it just about as valuable to him as his G, I just bet. I really like my truck, you guys help me enjoy it immensely. Jim
You know Jim, I like being like that splinter in your thumb that just won't come out. Someone once made a comment about G's being "less" than a Chevy and then that blue book thing fell out of the sky! There IS a God! You know I just like having fun with that. What's important is that every last one of us on this site feels about our trucks about the same as our own kids. We love them for what they are. Sometimes we can't figure them out, they take a lot of work, they come in different colors, some are faster than others, some are well dressed, some wear tattered overalls and have grease under their fingers, but I'm sure we all love our trucks for what they are and couldn't imagine life as happy without them. So keep showing those baby pictures! They're All beautiful and priceless in our eyes.
All this talk about a radio! Ya'll know what I'm going to do about a radio in mine? Put a new 9-volt transistor battery in my little transistored pocket radio since I've had since 1968 and hope that I can pick up WLS out of Chicago when the sun goes down! GOOD TIMES!
Ken, I can't remember the wattage of either station, but I know they made a big deal out of it at the time (early '60s). We couldn't get WLS where I lived in western SD, only KOMA at night. My cousins in MN used to rave about WLS, and I do remember hearing it later on, maybe in the later '60s. On the "radio in the truck" issue, my delete is fine. I can't hear anything, anymore, anyway, especially when I'm driving this 55 year old noise-machine. My music has to happen in the living room!!! Bob
