I am thinking about replacing the full door skins on the '66. Has anyone done this? How big of a job is it? How does the new skin compare to the OEM as far a quality and thickness? I have dents in the doors front the limiters not being hooked up at one point or another and the doors over swung into the fenders, lots of holes from various mirrors being mounted to them over the years, which shouldn't be too hard to weld up, and trim holes(going for the smooth look). Other than that the doors are solid. I need some opinions whether to fix my doors, re-skin them or get new doors.
I, personally, would just try to fix the ones on your truck. The holes will be an easy fix, the dents may be a little tougher. It justs seems to me that a full skin would be overkill, but I try to save as much of an original panel as possible when it comes to repairing/replaceing sheetmetal. If you decide to do a skin, it shouldn't be that terribly difficult either. You should be able to grind the edges to "cut" the old panel loose and use a chisel to help ease it away from the frame around the front, rear & bottom then cut across the top and watch it hit the floor. The new panel will have a lip that will need to be "bent" over on the back side of the door and I would use a little seam sealer all the way around the new panel before you crimp it on. Never done it personally, but that is how I would do it. Your third option would be to look around and try to find better doors. I bought a set from a guy in Norman 1 1/2 years ago for $150 that were nice. He had several parts for these trucks and was advertising them in the local "trader"(don't recall the exact name of it). I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find some in your area though. I picked up a 66 CC Big Window long fleet out there 3 years ago for $300. Solid as a rock, no motor/tranny, underdash a/c. The 'yard I liked to go to about 20-25 miles south of the City crushed out 2 years ago though. The newest stuff they had was from about 1980.
Thanks for the input! that is kinda what I was thinking too, didn't really want to do the skin, but am curious if anyone has done these and how big a PITA they are. Maybe one of the auto trader lines? Sounds like you got a deal on the long bed! That is cool! There used to be a cool old junk yard between Byars and Wayne somewhere(don't remember quite where) that had loads of old iron till they decided to crush and clean up the place, make me feel ill seeing that happen. Just a few days ago I saw a flat bed semi hauling crushed cars and what did I see on there? A '60-'66 (not sure of the year it was pretty flat) short step. I hate it!! Wish I had a home for all the strays, lol
If you decide to go with other doors,I have 2 in good shape for $200.00 drivers & passenger, I just bought two off a guy in Oklahoma that day in Dec. when I told you I would be over in your area close at Claremore,Ok. put both on my truck now I have 4 spare doors.I can get you pictures if your interested. Tail light cover? not sure what you mean. I don't need the filler piece you were talking about in your pm, just had it off to adjust the door. I would like to get the grill, but don't know when I would ever be up your way, and not sure what it would cost to ship, or if you are willing to ship it?
