Rebuilt the wheel cylinders today. Installed new front spring bushings. Reinstalled the gas tank. Started to put the brake lines back in but decided to replace all. Had to move the poor naked guy out to make room for a grandson project...transmission leaking! Yes, the tires and wheels have to go! Looking at 16" that would lower it about 5" compaired to what is on it now (750x17).

That does look great. I wonder what Chevy's thinking was for moving the gas tank from out the bed in '48 to inside the cab after that. Was this simply because of the spare tire? Does your truck have the spare tire carrier on the side of the bed?

    Thanks guys!

Still a long way to go but with it rollin again...I can manuver a little better in the wife's :D garage. I told her she might be able to get back in there before winter...not sure that's going to happen!

Anyway...I'm not sure where the spare goes on this thing? Keep in mind it's a 1 ton. At 85lbs. it would have to be pretty beefy. Now sure it even had one??? When I got it, it had four spares in the 9ft. bed. All 17" split rims. Anyone want them??? I'm trying to get to 16" with this.

My guess is the gas tank went inside to get it much higher and away from harm. We had a wreck here several years ago that a school bus got hit and burst into flames. It was bad. The gas tank has since been moved and protected. What year was it the tank was outside the frame of our AD's? I've seen it shown that way. Man, I'd worry about that setup.

    Thanks again,
    Rick

The spare on a 3800 pickup goes in the same place all the 3100. There is plenty of room to mount one on the side of the bed also. The hardware to hold the spare under the bed is similar but heavier than the 3100.

Just dont tell her which winter:D It always takes longer than you think. Old trucks appear to be in a different time zone to the rest of the world, a hour takes a day, a day takes a week, and a week takes as long as it wants to. Just ask HWMBO :(

    Couldn't have said it better!!!!:D

Mater has one FINE looking frame!

Thanks for helping with the advice, Gater! I bet there IS plenty of room for a "spare" between the back fender and the cab!:D

Looking good. It's all time & money. When you have the time you usually don't have the money.

    Hope you're right!!

Its been fun to this point but I think the easy part is over now. Now the money and time come into play. of course I'm not tellin you guys anything. Being my first project, it will be a budget breaker for sure...if I can talk the "lady of the house" into some more funds. :D It's rolin again and rust free...well, almost!

    Thanks,
    Rick
