Hey Guys i am looking for ways to make my rear window in my truck drop down , by means of a window crank or even better electric! i have got a few ideas on how to tackle this but has anyone got any good ideas that i could consider or better still has anyone made it work without leaks ? ive seen it done before but only on a 'nationals' dvd so never seen it up close my truck is soon going for paint so i have a few weeeks to do it 1 Any ideas ? Cheers ASH
it sounds like a cool idea. you might need to install a recessed window channel. the gap between the body skin and the interior skin should be enough to mount a track and window then use a remote regulator maybe? you could buy the regulator, track and window but the trick would be in the recess. that would probably a one off item. my .02 -Robert
Is that your truck in the avatar??? Ash~ Is that your ride??? Man, that is SLICK! ...even if it isn't yours...
B's 49 Na not mine lol mines a big warehouse full of scattered bits at the mo , thats my mate Barclays 49 he dont live that far from me and i met him through the trucks ! check out 'custom car' magazine over the next few months(uk mag) hes got a feature in there Camaro clip ,air ride, 10 bolt, whitewalls chrome steelies , beautiful truck, oh and oak bedwood ,(i did that i did , hell laugh when he sees i got that in, lol)
window drop down Thats what i thought about doin to be honest , i thought an easy wiring kit would work obviously using only one door mech , the hardest bit would be making the bottom edge water proof , the chanells i can make at work and the glas could be done local to me i jus worried about distortin a cab thats now 100% solid by cutting out a perfectly good window frame , SCARY
Use "c" channel that will fit the window felt that is in your doors. Bend the channel to fit your window fairly tightly, then weld in. Trim the bottom of the window skin to allow the window to go down into it. Glue in the window felt. Build a sheetmetal box to cover the bottom of the window track, then put in a drain tube out through the floor. Probably have to make an inside felt scraper of some sort to stop the rattles at the bottom of the glass. Use a cable drive window motor, and there you go! Good luck, take lots of pictures and do a tech article on it. Russ
Thats the way i thought of doin it , theres a sheet metal brake at work to make the channels but ill have to use thin felt to set the window as the door channels are too wide ! i was gonna use a window mech like my dolphin door ones ive eyed them up and they seem to be good for the job. the main thing im worried about is the cab going a bit scewwhiff when i trim out the rear window seam , i dont k now if its jus too much work to bother with and jus send it straight to paint ! ASH
that winow felt can squish down to fit the glass. If you weld the channel into the cab around the window, you should have all the support of the origional. Finish it off right, and most people won't even notice.....
Ash : DO THIS ! You'll need to make up a box for the sash to lower into , be sure the drain tube is at least 3/4" so it won't clog with debris . Look into the roll down rear window option on Model 'A' For- ~ Fo- F- ah hell , you know , those other brand cars they had this in '30 & '31 and it's a well designed setup apart from the too small drain tube that always rots out . Incline the bottom of the drain trough to the drain port to of course and weld the tube's nipple on the _outside_ , don't want even a tiny lip inside as dust will build up faster than you can imagine . I'd recommend a lever typ of lift over a cable or screw typ for longevity . Take lots and lots of photos so you can make up a nifty ' How-To ' on it .
so you mean make a box for the whole lot to sit in window regulator etc and for the excess water to drain into it and out ,rather than making the frame 100% waterproof ? i think im gonna research this all a bit more then take my time and go for it ! itll jus set my truck apart from the others over here and look cool at the same time Cheers ASH
I remember many years ago... One of the truck magazines did an article about this very subject. I just started into my transmogrification and planned on picking it up. I got side tracked and it was off the shelf by the time I went back for it. Haven't been able to track it down again since. I did glance through it briefly and really don't remember too many details, but I seem to remember they gutted a stationwagon tailgate and chopped it down to work. it was a real slick setup. If you devise a plan let us know. A sliding rear window would suffice, but a complete drop down... well, that would rock.
Yes ! It sounds to me like you've got the skills.... This way it'll be easier and simple to maintain ~ I see far too many old Kustoms in the scrap yard because some cool looking thing was so poorly excecuted it made the vehicle not worth the hassle once the novelty wore off ~ don't fall into this trap . Any job worth doing , is worth doing well . You can always learn and practice by doing it for free labor on your buddy's old truck...... -Nate
im gonna sort the bits out i need , set myself up , make the window runner first from stainless then crack on balls out ! ill take loads of pics then work out how to do a tech article on it watch this space
drop down electric window STARTED! drilled out the spotwelds around the window frame , cut the inner panel to expose the inside of the cab band , this is the ideal opportunity to clean behind the inner panel, made a template of the window opening and got a stainless u channel then cut slots in it to allow me to make a curve around the corners , welded that all up and ground it down smooth offered it up and its a nice snug fit im gonna use the cab band edge to make a drip tray and drain making it a second weather seal, (ill take some pics as i didnt think id get time to work on the truck today so didnt take it to work) lined up the mech too , gonna use a flat glass window winder that i bought for my electric windows and then ill have to get another set for the doors so all in all went smooth today ive got my fingers crossed that itll be plain sailing from here on too ps i kept the inner panel i trimmed out to gain access to the cab band , im gonna stitch it back in later to make it look like its stock from the inside and outside it should look original albiet with a lack of window rubber
What a BAXXXXD ! What an evening ive had , went to fit the 'snug fitting' stainless window track , what a Fuxxer! not good enough , had to fabricate a new one , i bent a bit of 10mm square bar around the stainless frame i already made to get the shape , then welded zintek 1.2mm sheet in 40mm strips to the top and bottom of this to make a h channel , 15mm/10mm bar/15mm if you get me x10mm deep this is for the glass to run in and to take up the gap between the outer and inner panels of the cab then i welded this to the cab in two halves as it was easier to fit this way, then i seamed this all the way round after squaring the lot up , i plan to trim the edge of the window frame and edge it with a black trim to make it look like it has a smaller version of thye original rubber seal . i then made the mounts for the electric window motor and fitted the glass (plywood) to make sure it would all line up ! then i welded the old inner panel back into the gap and thats it really , i might change the winder to a lever one to get a bit more clearance between the inner and outer panels , as was advised earlier , at least this away ill still have my widers for my door windows! the window didnt need a drain as in my opinion it is such a nice fit and due to the fact this will be a fair weather truck it wont see rain anyway! if you did decide to make a drain you could box in the cab band inner panel and take the drain off that after sealing it off. By the way please dont look to close at my bird-poo welding skills , its the first time ive used a welder unsupervised, let alone on thin sheet metal although i managed it ok its not perfect lol to be honest i wouldnt reccommend this job to anyone its a pain in the butt, but it does look good and im still glad i done it ive still got a bit of fiddling to do to make it all spot on but it almos there ill make sure i post some pics when its all painted
