I came across this post about a guy that painted his car for $50 using of all things a paint roller. I was very skeptical myself but after viewing his photos, it actually doesn't look bad at all. The thread is rather lengthly but look for the entry by 69chargeryeehaa. He goes into great detail on how he did it.
Paint! It wouldnt suprise me at all, years ago i knew an old chap who brush painted all his old trucks, he was a signwriter by trade, doing vans and trucks, but what was really amazing was he seemed like he had parkinsons disease and he always had the faint odour of whiskey on his breath. His hands would be all shakey right up to about an inch from the bodywork then bang, steady as a rock, never ever used masking tape, even when doing long thin pinlines down the side of vans! and his lines were arrow straight! he drew all lettering free-hand in chalk first then off he would go, the old Morris pick-up he drove looked like new and i thought he was tuggin my leg when he said it was brush painted, but someone else had him paint an old truck and watched him do it! and confirmed to me that he was for real, so using a roller is very possible.
roller paint If you wanted to spend enoug time with 1500 /2000 grit wet an dry you could throw the paint at it it wouldnt make any difference, ive sen some realy bad painters finish a job making it look a million dollars , theres hope for all us amateurs out there
Much more time than it is worth. Get a spray gun and spray it. I painted my rims with 1 shot, it flows out nicely, especially when thinned with mineral spirits. No one knows the difference and it holds up very well.
And another thing~ The reason I gave up on this idea was I wanted R-E-D. Auto paint has a hardener added that will keep your colors from fading. If I'm going to do things, I want them to last. (As long as they can...) Take it from me~ Say "I can" and go paint that sucker!
I painted my 78 with a cheap paint brush and rustoleum paint. The body had small dents and inperfections. I daubed the paint making an orange peel look. The paint only lasted 5years and am doing it again. For $25 paint job it looks like $1000 from 15' away. If I had tried acrylic enamel I may not have had to repaint. If you have a slick body spend the money for a high $ paint. On anything else be your on judge. Use a foam roller if you do, no one likes roller fuzzies in paint.
The $50.00 Paint Job This works well and is THE way to go on old farm trucks and folks on a tight budget where labor is plentiful but ca$h isn't... Use Acylic Enamel so it won't fade out and you can buff it to a mirror finish.... No B.S. guys , it's just makes the professionals crazy , that's a good thing else they'd do it to us when we paid full ticket for a good paint job
Thank you. Some day I'll have my silver over laser blue mica. For now rattle can with hand painted pinstripes will do.
