Hi, i found a good used engine in Europe (a 235 from 1954) but have a leak on the rear main bearing. What kind of seal is the best?. rope or rubber?. Volker
Rear Main Bearing leaks That 1954 235 is a one year only beast so don't pay too much for it Volker . it should have a rope typ oil seal but the wear in the main bearings will have more to do than the seal proper . Plan on replacing all the bearing shells . I am told there is now a rubber seal to replace the early rope types , i have not used it so I don't know but rubber is more flexible and so should seal better . Please to remember : these engines were serious leakers when new .
@nate What do you mean with beast?. It's a powerful engine or an engine with permanent problems? I think i will change all seals before i put the engine in my truck. Volker
New engine 235 CI Hey Volker Just went trough the whole prosess my self. I swapped the 216 engine to for a 235 CI and remanufactured the complete engine. I agree with Nate and follow his advice. The gasket kits on EBAY/classic parts of America/carter/Patricks can help you further. Patricks is an expert on this subject 216/235 engine swapp. He gives free advice ,sels all the engine parts and tells you the details you need to know.Ask for his booklet and partslist on beforehand. Its a dirty job but someone has got to do it , greatings Martinius. http://www.patricksantiquecars.com/
@martinius an the best is, the engine comes from Denmark (it's a recommendation from Patricks) I think it's the best when i swap the engine and the Ring/Pinion at the same time. All parts for R/P from Patricks are here and i have a lot of time in the next winter. I know i need time to swap but i need an engine without basic trouble. I have a 216 with small power, have a lot of fun with it and drive my truck this season but it's too slow for the german streets. Volker
1954 235 CI Engine Well ; yes it is more powerful , the deal is : you cannot simply slap a rear main seal in it and expect it not to leak . The center main bearing caps will likely have shims between the cap and the cylinder block , pay close attention to where they go ! . I just prefer the '55 ~ '62 235's my self .
Yes it is more power but not much more if you're measuring speed and power on the autobahn. Europe is so full of diesels why not do something exciting and swap for a diesel?
Never diesel. i drive a diesel in my other car every day and i think a diesel in my truck isn't the right thing for the old lady. I want to an original collector car. the biggest problem are the other driver. they come from behind, hold the eyes wide open - i can see the thoughts - pass my truck - look at the rear mirror and make a emergency brake to take a look to the front. grrr and i drive with 50 mph and think all bad things about these driver i don't have weapons in my bags. sorry it's a crazy law in germany Therefore need i little bit more power and speed. It's stressful to drive with a lot of rednecks on the streets.
Hey Volker I bought mine from Copenhagen DK (55 modell)The only tricky part with this engine swap is the bigger harmonic balancer.I tweaked the fanblades a bit and there is still anough rom between radiator and engine (about 2 cm). Swapping engines means that you mostly have to remanufacture the complete arrangement? The newy type shortpump does after mine opinion fits right in. No hacking with the radiator is needed.Patrick`s magazine is geat sunday morning lecture.Ask for one. Patrick`s love these 53-54 engines because the balancer is a less smaller then the 55 models and some easyer to rebuild but elsewhere the same. Together with the 3.55 crownwheel/pignion rear end it could be an autobahn truck. But i am not shore if it is innerchargable with the older type torgue tubes/rear end? You will love the 4 speed Saginaw gearbox to. Eventhough it is a major change from the origenal 3 speed on the colum. Good luck with your project and send us some pictures, we love them.
