Today he is at the tag office trying to get his unlicensed 50 Chevy truck from Tennessee registered in Texas with a set of YOM Texas plates. I don't remember if he has a Tennessee title or not. Good luck Ken. You'll need it.
He scared me too! Dang Bill. Warn a guy next time! What a pleasant way to spend a day off. Got the truck inspected and spent more time shooting the bull with the owner of the shop then we did inspecting the vehicle. Then it was off to the courthouse annex papers and plates in hand. Gotta admit that I was nervous while standing in line eyeing all of the young ladies barking at people who didn't cross their "t's" and dot their "i's" correctly. I was hoping to get the only one there who appeared to be old enough to be able to count how old the truck was. Didn't get her, but was pleasantly surprised at the efficient and pleasant manner in which my gal did the paperwork. I only suffer a minor stroke when the official lady who looks at plates told me that mine were passenger car plates and that I couldn't use them on a truck. I schooled her very politely on Texas' YOM law and asked her if she'd check again. She came back 5 agonizingly long minutes later and said that she had called Austin to verify and that I could use the plates. Too bad for the 1/2" glass between us because I would have kissed her square on the lips! Here's a couple before and after shots of today. Now the fun begins! Glad to be able to drive this puppy legally! Ken
Congratulations Ken! BTW, I have a load of busted up concrete I need to haul to the dump. Please stop by in the morning and we'll put your truck to good use.
YOM plates Congrats Ken! Dig the shape of those old TN plates too! Here in WA we can use YOM plates on old vehicles with no renewal fees. Unfortunately there are restrictions...like no hauling, for one. I'll be keeping my regular ones on my old Chevy. Bob
Thanks Bob! Yeah, I love the old Tennessee plates too. They were shaped like the "State of Tennessee" until the government standardized the dimensions of license plates in 1957. Up until then, the states had the right to have their plates any way they wanted them. Ken
Tell me more about this. I'm in Missouri. I've heard I can run a old Missouri plate of 52 gender. Where do I get info on this. Thanks
YOM plates Breezy, you'll need to check your state website....somewhere here????? http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/motorv/ Bob
I know you're excited to have that truck at home and legal to drive anytime you want. Now it's time to take Sara out for some ice cream at the sonic and show that nice truck off.
photo op Just another opportunity to get some pics of your truck on the forum eh Ken! You make me sick!
A real beauty Ken. The Brit's just jealous the dont fix old trucks or teeth over there! Guess we wont fix anything either over 60-yr old in ObamaNation next year. Maybe time for Logan's Run?
In NC you can run any antique plate without registering them. You just have to have the rel tag in the vehicle with you. In SC you can register an antique tag, but it can only start with certain letters. Apparently different letters are for different institutions....davidack4 ran into this problem with his.
Big Brother... Now that it's all tagged, you better be burning around town in it! As silly as it may sound, the first place I'm taking my family in mine is to our local Sonic!
Trust me Zig, as hot as it's been here, I definitely burn around (burn around my legs from the hot air coming in from the cowl vent)
WA plates Check out my 'AD' vintage plate. It's aluminum. They didn't issue plates in '48, they only issued a sticker. With the appropriate year plate, you only have to register once as a classic vehicle in WA...no annual renewal fees!
Hey Ken Now that your fantastic '50 is in Texas and you really aren't in any significant need of prayer as Mr. Bill set off the alarms in my head, maybe you will bring that rascal to the big Beaumont Hot Summer Nigts Car Show on the 8 and 9th of August? My money says easy first place in their 49 to 73 restored truck class. i have a tough time taking an occasional 3rd, but my truck has been a roadie for almost 7 years now, and doesn't show as well as it used to. Think about coming to Beaumont Ken, right down highway 90 through Liberty, or come down 105 from Cleveland. You can sit in the heat with me, get Bill to bring his G and we can hold a regular vigil for you. Jim
I don't think Ken's garage queen has been out much since it arrived in Tomball. As far as I know he hasn't even made it to our local Klein Shine. If he'll go to Beaumont I'll follow along with a tow strap for support.
Dang Bill, cut me some slack. It's only been street legal for 8 days! And unless you've forgotten, Pct. 4 Constables aren't the friendliest of folks! Jim, I'd love to come to the Beaumont show with the truck, however, I'll be in beautiful downtown Port Mansfield on that weekend doing my part to decrease the redfish, trout and flounder population!
