Junkyarding Please remember that the two flat headed screws holding the valve to the firewall are special and impossible to find , as is the correct nut , bolt & washer holding the control rod's support to the dashboard lip.... Care should be taken to not drop these unobtanium fasteners when you're excitedly removing your find .

Bad Ties! I have had problems with Bowtie in the past. I sent my door hinges in for the core on a new set. They ended up charging me for the core anyway. They said mine could not be rebuilt. If mine had been in good shape, I would not have been buying a new set. The Ranco valve also requires a core or core charge. It does not even say what that is and they won't tell you until you send it in. Then if they don't think it can be rebuilt, they will charge you the core and charge you to ship your core back if you want it. I told them I was going to "bad mouth" them whenever I had the chance. I had heard bad things years back about them , but They got much bigger , So I once again assumed things were different now . I gota quit Assuming . Thanks to wi49 Thanks to Paul B. I now have the RANCO heater control valve (w/rod). Now that I have it in my hands it does not seem like it would be that difficult to rebuild. The rubber seal looks like the only part that would need to be replaced. Has anyone rebuilt one of these? Is it hard or straightforward? I understand rebuild instructions are included with the rubber seal. I am still looking for the mounting bracket. I will have to check out the local bone yards, but Texas is blazing hot this summer. I will wait for cooler weather (may not be until November). Greg
Ranco Valve NAPA sells the kit , it's just the rubber diaphram and a million generation copy of the instruction sheet , hard to read . There's four tabs you must un bend then re bend , they break off about 1/2 the time , just silver solder it if they break . Getting the round brass thing out without bending it's edge and creating leaks , that's the tricky part . I can't find the NAPA Balkamp P/N , sorry .
Thanks Nate. I will look it up on NAPA. I figured those tabs would be the hard part. I may hit them with a soldering iron before I bend them. Maybe they won't be as brittle that way? Greg
So Close.... Thanks to Paul B., I have a RANCO core to rebuild. I got the seal from NAPA, but the instructions don't seem to be for this valve. I am hoping the seal is the same. I managed to disassemble the valve fairly easily except for the very last part. The old seal was brittle and crumbling and was easily removed, but I cannot seem to figure out how the valve shaft separates from the copper housing. The elongated U-bracket on the end seems to be captured by the end of the shaft. I can't seem to figure out if the end of the shaft has been mushroomed. It does not want to unscrew from the housing. I also can't tell if the silver bell-shaped spacer is molded inside the seal or if it goes on top of the seal. If it goes on top, then the shaft has to be removed somehow.
