I am sure that this sort of question has been asked before and I did do a search but nothing came up.

I just bought a '63 Fleetside Longbed and the guy who sold it says it's a 3/4 ton. I bought the '63 Chevy Truck manual and unless I am not understanding (a reasonable possibility) the VIN # identifies it as a 1 1/2 ton truck.

3C154J

3:1963
C:conventional
15:1 1/2 ton (11:1/2 ton, 12:3/4 ton, 13:1 ton, 15:1 1/2 ton)
4:cab and pickup body
J:Jonesville

The GVW is listed as 4400 pounds which matches a 3/4 ton truck in the chart (near as I can tell).

Thanks

This is the link you need, since you have a Chevrolet, not a GMC:

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=8

3 = Model Year = 1963
C = Chassis Designation = 2wd
15 = Series = 1/2 ton long bed 127" wheel base
4 = Truck Type = Pickup
J = Assembly Plant = Janesville

If your truck is equipped with factory six lug spindles/axles, you have a factory 1/2 ton truck. Conversly, if your truck is equipped with factory eight lug spingles/axles, you a factory 3/4 ton truck.
