Hey guys, I've got one of these engine missing issues that defies solution. There seems to be a miss that's worse under power. Seems like its coming back through forward carb on my dual carb setup. It is a car 55-57,' 235, hydraulic lifter. I've checked and triple checked the usual suspects...ballast resister, distributor, points, timing, coil, plug gap, new condenser, plug wires appear new, firing order, (yes nate!!! 14's too young, 36 too old, 24 just right). My wife even frowns when I recite it (55), women are so insecure. Compression is an unbelievable 160PSI across the board from PO. The 1 & 2 plugs seem to soot up quick. Its miserable to drive, can't get power beyond 45MPH. Any ideas would be appreciated. Flashlight
Engine Missing I bet , if you'd just bother to _look_ , it's right where you left it... This certainly sounds like a spark problem , as Tim said , I'd look into firing order again first ,it's easy to miss one or two wires swapped . then , I'd take that nasty old dizzy cap and test it in situ just in case your new one is defective or has invisible carbon tracks etc. . Didja look at it running in the dark ? my old '46 used to have " St. Elmo's Fire " seriously badly even though it ran fine...
Loose carb? Once upon a time, I was driving my '64 up to see my brother. It started running crappy, which for my Chevy was unheard of! Finally, I pulled off on the shoulder, got out and looked around under the hood. I reached across the top of the engine and as I did that, my arm bump the carb. I saw the carb move a bit, so I tried wiggling the carb. It rocked back and forth because one of the nuts had vibrated up and off its stud! Try that with one of these "'puterized" rides now days! All I had to fix it was fishing line. I snugged the remaining bolt down as hard as I could by hand, then took fishing line and wound it around and around the stud that lost its nut. Whatever works, right? Good luck with your ride~ hope you get it straightened out!
