Just to say hello to you all. I'm new at this like a lot of you. I'm 66 and just starting this total rebuild. I'm installing a 348 in this 58 chev. Trying to figure out the motor mounts at this time.
hey hcarter, Nice to have you around. I have a 59 with 235 so im no help on the V8 swap. But I can tell you there is some great parts sites out there with all you need to know in doing anything on your truck. Feel free to ask for and help. I have gotton so much help on here in the last month it aint funny. From electric wiper repair to Rear axle swap. Would not beleive it. Any way nice to have you. Hope to talk to you more.
have you determined what transmission your going to use.I used aftermarket front and rear crossmembers(our host sells them) to install the smallblock and t-350 trans.I made everything so i could slide it on the frame rails so i could check radiator clearence and firewall. If your using headers it would be a good idea to install them to make sure you have room on the p/s gear box .I had to make a fitting to get proper clearence so the fluid wouldn't get overheated .I did a frame off modified restore on a 57 1/2 ton. I had the luxery of fitting most components with the body off .the cab was mounted to get the motor set were it needed to go.think it through ,ask lots of questions, theres alot of knowledge on this site and the guys here are more than willing to help. Good luck Bobby
engine swap hello hcarter. It's an easy fix putting in a v8 congratulation an having a 348 That one with the wedged heads, isn't it? they are quite rare overhere will make it a nice thing to see You can buy a conversion kit for your truck If you use an original bellhousing for your truck there wouln't be a problem maybe you need an older points ignition for firewall clearence If it will be placed with a automatic transmission you will have to get the transmissioncrossmember out Do not go to far to the front for firewallclearance or driveshaftaxleclearence (very tempting)or you will get your engine crossmember on your brake hose hole (in case you use the inrail engine mount) there is another hole that you will want to use,but that one will make your hoses hit the tire when steering because it's of center from your axle That can be solved by using a spring that holds the hose a litlle closer to the frame.(but I find that risky, because when it hits your tire and scrubs thru you will have no brakes) You can also slice a litlle from your engine mount to clear the hole (Be sure to testmatch your hoses for the snapring to fit) Another thing with a v8 is your exhaustheaders. A lot of aftermarket headers hit your steergear at the 7e cilinder The best are the original center pocket ramhorns They also close up the best on your gaskets I hope you can do something with this info Have fun on your restauration
Toyota. I think they said 85-88 4x4 .putting a notebook together with all the aftermarket parts and part numbers i used on my 57 When i get to that info i can let you know if you'd like? Bobby
Thanks for the pics. They actually help. I'm going to use a m22 munci. What steering gear is that. I'm probably going to install power on mine before it's done.
