How do I get the shift lever out of the lid ? .

It's not like the old Muncie SM420 I know and love .

Ideas , pictures , links to threads or shop manuals etc. gladly accepted .

    TIA ,

Martinius, those "special" tools are for working on the tranny itself. Here is a pic of the tool to remove the shifter and the write up on how to do it.

If these are too small to read, go to the second link I posted and scroll down to the manual transmission section and you can find both of these pages there.

    Thanx everyone !

I am so accustomed to just pushing the retainer on the old , million mile farm / junkyard trucks with my fingers , I thought this spiffy '76 had a different setup than the SM420's did as it's *so* tight .

I'll give it a go in a bit , it's my day off so I'm goofing off & lollygagging , slurping coffee etc. instead of going back to work.... .

    Update

O.K. , it turns out to be *exactly* the same as the old SM420 , I just ever so gently grabbed the lip with my medium size water pump pliers and gave it a 1/4 turn counter clockwise and it popped loose . I was worried about nothing .

I'll be adding an update in the '73 ~ '87 page soon , give it a look if you care .

    Bump

If you care (no one on the '73 ~'87 page does) , I posted a little bit about my clutch job , it's moving forward ever so slowly ........

I guess I've married this fine old truck now , once it's running again I'll have to finish the radio & speakers then have new carpets installed...... .

    Then what ? Paint I suppose :p .

Anyone want to buy a rebuilt rust free farm truck ? .

    I didn't think so .
