Hi guys, I just bought a 63 GMC fleetside with the 305E V6 and I have a couple questions. Firstly, it has running lights on top of the cab. Are these stock on a 1/2 Ton? Was it an option? Are they aftermarket? I've looked through pages and pages of 63 GMC's but don't see any with cab lights! My other question is what drop springs would give me a level stance? I'm thinking 2 inches in front and 3 in the back. It looks like I could go 3 inches in the front and 4-5 in the back. Also with drop springs do I need different shocks? Lower is better but I don't want to swap in drop spindles. Thanks!
Welcome to the forum. The roof lights were optional. Attached are the 1960 installation instructions, and a couple of catalog pages. I can't help with the lowering questions:
Thanks for the info. The roof lights on my cab don't have a chrome shroud. The tops are completely yellow plastic in a tear drop shape and the bottom is black plastic. Were the 63 cab lights different than the 60 cab lights? I'm trying to figure it out but not finding much on it. There are no examples. I'd like to put the proper lighting on the cab for the year. Edit: I just looked through 50 pages of 60-66 trucks and found ZERO examples with over cab lights. Either it's really, really, really, rare or someone added them later on. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=107362
The '60-'66 Chevy/GMC truck clearance lights were all the same and will have Yankee 77 stamped in the chrome bezel. You can install factory-correct cab clearance lights, located in the holes that are currently in the cab.
Thanks for the answer! I searched all over for info and came up empty. I still wonder though, why there aren't more 60-66's with over cab lights? Maybe over cab lights were a different era. I'd still like to get the skinny on lowering. Is there a FAQ on it somewhere? I can't measure my current stance since the left front is sagging. Just want to get the rear end down to a level or almost level stance.
Perhaps these threads will help answer some of your lowering questions: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=452148&highlight=lowering http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=196457 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=451509&highlight=jeep+springs
