So for some of you that have seen my original posts my project started as a "truck in a bucket". Lots of various parts but nothing really together. The cab that I am using is a Chevy but the rest of the truck is a GMC. I have the door jam plate for the Chevy but not for the GMC. It would be nice to be able to register as a GMC but I do not know the original serial number. Is there a way to recreate this or find one that will work for my truck? If this is a no go for legal reasons please help me not make a bad mistake. THanks
Re:Truck In A Bucket Do you have the title that goes along with the Chevy VIN plate? You will be saving yourself an enormous amount of headache to go ahead and register it as a Chevy.
Jason, Federale makes a very valid point. First off, do you have a clean title to the truck? If so, what number did they use for the vehicle ID number? Some states use the serial number on the cab, some use the engine serial number. You need to check with your local DMV. Inasmuch as you don't have the original cab, making up a GMC serial number could give you headaches in the future if you are ever called on to prove that it is indeed the original serial number of the truck and that you are the legal owner. If you falsify the serial number AND register it with that number, I'm pretty sure that qualifies you to be Bubba's bitch in the Big house. Something to think about! Ken
Though this may be a little off of center in the legal world, people sell titles and vin tags all day lo ng. There is only 2 rivets that hold the tag on the pillar, and those rivets are available for the restoration crowd.....You would want to take the tag off and reinstall after paint. I did on the truck I restored, then put it back....no one could tell. If you were to buy a title and tag you could easily switch it out. Of course we couldn't publicly condone this sort of behavior, but it happens all the time. Some DMVs will issue a title and vin after jumping through their hoops, I know NC can. You will get a serial # sticker in the door jamb.
Titling What Russ said . As long as the frame is apart , consider marking the VIN off the doorpost tag , into the frame before you finish it up and re - paint it as AD's have NO VIN on the frame and the DMV & Police likes to see one . stamp it carefully , on the flat top of the frame rail near the steering box where it'll be visible when the inner fender is in place .
New Hampshire does not require titles for vehicles over 15 years old which is good because I don't have a title. They will issue a title if I request one using a vin or serial number verification by a law enforcement officer. If a guy was interested in purchasing a data plate where might that take place, hypothetically speaking. I actually have many friends on the job who can check the numbers unofficially prior to the official check. Thanks for your input as always.
Someone with a lot of old vehicles, who has a GMC of the same approximate year (47-53 would work, no one at theDMV would know the difference) or there are title sales places all over. Swap meets, hemmings, etc. http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ http://www.cartitlesforsale.com/ I can't speak for either of these, but they came up on a quick search.
I did mine on the block number of the engine. I didn't have a title, just a bill of sale. Now I have a title in KS
