Guys , I have the original 18" steering wheel on my '48 w/P/S but I would like to keep the spoke part of the wheel and just cut the rim down to about 16". Anybody ever done that? I have a 16" Silverado wheel/rim cut off of the wheel spoke and was gonna try to weld it to my original wheel spoke cut down then somehow puddy the 16" rim and paint it. Might have to cover it up with some type of leather wrap but would like to keep the originality of the stock wheel, just not so big round. Even with P/S the big wheel makes it hard to manuver round. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanx, Mike
Some people fix wheels with JB Weld..... There is an epoxy product for steering wheel repair, but I have never tried it.
Foose did the modification your are talking about on a 71 truck on Overhaulin. Steering wheel modification is at 4:37 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMS0ecILG9Y&feature=player_embedded
Lakeroadster, The Foose way is great but I cheeted and cut a smaller wheel down. Hopefully that will work. Thanx for the show, I missed that one. ol' chebby, I have used JB and regular bondo, it seems to work just as well. Thanx for the tip.
Re: Smaller Wheel Might it be possible to fit the entire car steering wheel off a 53-54? I'll bet it would look great!
There are vendors out there that have a smaller version of the stock wheel. I've seen them at some of the car shows but I'm not sure who makes them....
Yes federale, a '53-'54 would look great cause they usually have the horn ring and nice bowtie in the center but they are only bout 1" smaller. (and they arn't cheep) I even had a premo SS 62 impala 2 tone wheel that would look great but the dish is deep and its on another truck now. I guess thats why I wanted to try and install a smaller ring cause the wheel is flat (no dish) and just bought a new/old horn button , i would like to use it. I'll figure out some way..........like Lakeroaster said"thats old skool" bigtim, I didn't want to take out a 2nd morgage to buy a steering wheel so far my truck is 99.9%PD 4,and i need to use up some of the x-tra parts left over that i bought during the years
