WELCOME, Chad! What a great looking truck you scored! Love the little gear head you have in the makings there~ I'm thinking he'll want daddies truck to go zoom-zoom.
Take l-o-t-s of pictures of everything before, on it's way apart, and then when it's all back together. Your son will treasure this forever.
Good luck with your reworking of that fine AD. Sounds like you have a good, solid plan.

Thanks Zig. He is definitely mechanically inclined. He once saw me taking a few parts off of a carpet shampooer to clean it, and he came into the kitchen to tell me he "helped" me by taking it the rest of the way apart! Couldn't hardly get mad, but mama wasn't happy. lol

I grew up, laying on a creeper, holding a flashlight for my dad. Had a 1923 Model T, and enjoyed every minute of time spent in the garage, even if it was only with a bottle of Turtlewax Chrome Polish in my hand! Mom would come out at 2am and tell me its WAYYY past my bedtime, and dad would save me by saying he needed my help. Loved it. You are right, it is something you treasure forever.

    Axles

So I'm on the hunt for a 1/2 ton axle. What years will work, or more importantly, what years/models should I stay away from?

While I'm asking the question, what should I look for, for a rear end? Want the lowered stance (since I am going to do a dropped from axle), staying with rear drums is fine, but I wouldn't shy away from a rear axle with discs either. I have read what others have put in....... Want something that will require little or no modifications, has ideal gears already in it, and correct width. My fear is when I read something like "get a 1987-1989 S10 rear end", that with such a narrow scope, I wont find one locally. Any suggestions?

Henry has a 2007 Chevy Blazer Rear end installed. 3:43 gearing.

It is a little narrow so I added 2" wheel spacers on each side. It is perfect with the wheels I am running.

Are you pretty happy with that gear ratio? Are you running the rear discs too, thought I saw you had drums on yours? Will have to start scouting, as we only have 1 junk yard in town.

I have 342/1 in mine and the ride is very nice. If you want to pull trailers you may need 380 to 410 with an overdrive.

Good deal. I will probably never pull a trailer or a heavy load with it, that is what I have the F250/V10 for.

Took the seats out and the old material off, started taking fenders off, and front bumper. Looks like PB blaster is going to be my friend. :D The kid got in and said "when we go out tommorrow, can I drive?" Yeah bud, gonna take a little longer than a day lol.

Oh, so I have been working on cars/trucks/motorcycles for 20+ years, and have never seen these bolts/button head screws with like a rectangular recess (but the oldest thing i have ever worked on was my '78 Cadillac). I'm assuming there is a special driver for them? They were holding rear fenders on, and headlight into front fenders. Had to stop because my square driver bits weren't working and I didn't want to strip them.

Looks like you've got a good start on your truck. Looks nice.
Our host sells a set of 3 drivers for the Clutch Head bolts/screws. I also found a couple of double ended cordless driver bits at one of those tool booths at a swap meet. I ground the end of a bolt to roughly fit when I was taking mine apart, and with the help of vise grips on the bolt head, I removed the rear fenders. I didn't worry about damaging the bolts, as replacements are also available from our host here. Hope this helps. Bill
