Oil Leaks Indy, Oil leaks are nasty and for the last 2+ years I put up with leaks i thought were the rear maim and then a head gasket but was the side cover rear screws and a little hole in the same cover that was fixed with a screw driver and some hot stuff super glue red. This exhaust leak is well, I'm getting faster at taking that system apart and back together again. I usually have to hire things out because of my back and some F'n crackhead taking my tools some years back. Then after paying for the work to be done I go back and redo or fix what I paid for someone else to do. Some of the comments I get from the public keeps me going and all of the members here stops me from taking the BFHs I have to the parts. Just getting in there and doing it sure helps. Seeing everyones children in,on, and helping work on the trucks helps me also. Thanks and hang there, Charles
Nate, I worked for 3 yrs for a retired Air Force motor pool mechanic when I got out of high school. He had a lot of knowledge to pass on to me, and a little bit of it stuck, I think. At the small garage we had, we seldom used exhaust gaskets. We machined the surfaces smooth, applied some Copper Kote, or Nickle Anti-Seize, then torqued the bolts, (in sequence) to only about 18-20 ft/lb. Never had a leak that I'm aware of... On the I6 engines, we'd assemble intake to exhaust manifold and leave the bolts just snug until after torqueing the manifold to head bolts, then torque the intake to exhaust bolts. Does this sound to you like a possible solution to these exhaust leak problems? I had a '56 Chevy Sedan and had no exhaust gaskets and it never gave a problem in 8 years.
Russ, What you say here is one of those times when we need that Like Button. The photos of your children and the others members children and also the members giving a ride to there parents is what helps me a lot. One of the Very Best for me is this photo. Thanks Russ, Charles
Tightning the bolts Charles I read that you re-tighten the bolts when the engine is cold but as the metal expands when metal gets cold i would re-tighten them bolts when egine is hot.Torque them as Nate explaned to you from center to outwards. In worst case you could find another straighter manifold but thats another story.
Reminds me of the 348's and them having no gaskets. Because of these gaskets being Clifford's I followed their suggestion for installing their gasket and not using any past/sealant. I will if this time falls discard the manifold and use another or just go dual carb and tube headers. But I will try the no gasket and the RTV sealant first. Charles
Learn As You Go Well ; I worked on many old IHC V-8's when our Fleet was IHC , they never had exhaust manifold gaskets and leaked constantly ~ my solution was to order up gaskets from NAPA , never any leaks after that . I too , worked with and learned under , older Journeyman Mechanics who knew far more than I ever will , I value their teaching more than anything else , I miss them all greatly and I humbly apologize for the never ending questions ! .
Exhaust leak Hi Charles check this article out hope it helpshttp://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/manifold.html
Thanks Ron, How have things been there lately, it was 113 Saturday before the rain hit, we had to leave about that time and get back here. Next month I'm going to put the Historical Vehicle tags on the 48, are you going to do that by chance? Thanks again for the link, Charles
Historical Plates Charles, its been hotter than the hinges to hell lately still trying to get used to it as far as the historical plates not quite sure of the benefit of them, when i asked the dmv cant remeber what they said but i decided against it charles did you say you have a place in Payson.
Ron, I like the price of the tags there, the 48 was 183$ a yr. in Ca. and I think less than 40$ there. That is Allen ( AZ58Cameo ) who lives there in Payson, I'm out kinda in the Salome area. Sooner or later I am going to have to start working on the 52 and make it a desert runner, that 235 I got from Allen should be enough for it. May have to run out there again Saturday to work on the watering system, the heat had hurt some of the little barrel cactus I sat out. The filters had clogged. Hang in there, Charles
