Guage responce I Have heard alot of bad things about dolphin guages. I am looking into auto meter myself. Speedway motors has alot to choose from.
I love love love my stock gauges. I honestly wish new vehicles had these style of gauges. Best part of my truck and wouldn't change it for the world!
Gauge Options I tend to agree but then , us Blue Collar Working Types tend to gravitate to - wards basic , well engineered stuff that simply gets the job done . Were I to fancy up my '49 Chevrolet 3100 , I'd use stock GMC gauges but , each to their own . If you go to Auto Shows you'll soon see lots and lots of different AD gauge solutions .
Previous owner paid to have these New Vintage gauges put in my truck. They look similar to stock, work well and the company provides good tech support.
Stock gauges I've got rebuilt stock ones that I like the look of, but my only problem is I find the backlight really poor. Has anyone upgraded the lighting? If I do a 12v conversion I'm assuming I'm going to blow them anyway.
If you do a 12V conversion you'll need to replace the lamp bulbs with 12V bulbs and put a 12 to 6 volt reducer in circuit between 12V and your gas gauge. I like Runtz reducers.
Is there an easy option for replacing the ammeter with a voltmeter in the stock array? I'd like to get away from all the truck's current running through the same gage, especially after adding "modern" accessories... Or am I worrying over nothing, given that 12V amperage should be less than the original 6V?
Volt Meter This is a good idea and I don't understand why no one has made a stock looking volt meter for AD's yet . Bill , those gauges look very nice but three of them are backwards ~ that's very odd to me . Backlighting isn't any problem with 12 volts . what I always do is : take the gauge apart and spray the inside of the back housing gloss white ~ this lights up even 6 volt gauges , very well indeed .
Good stuff. Thanks guys. I'll try that paint tip and see if it's any better. Nate, I can't find these gauges you're talking about (the 52 project ones) Do you have a link to the thread?
I think this is the thread Nate was referring to. https://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=20742 A little costly, but very cool.
Think I'm going to try this approach. Nate, all y'all, check out this link -- voltmeter conversion (Hope linking to this other site isn't considered impolite.)
