what is the best engine degreaser? It's finally getting warm enough to get to work on the vehicles. It made it to 45 today lol

Deep in the heart of BNSF territory!

Klamath Falls? Dude, you're one of my heroes! The only thing I love better that vintage Chevys is trains. Klamath Falls is every BNSF foamers dream!

But I digress...Engine degreasers are a dime a dozen and all work good. Oven cleaner is a great degreaser. Gunk makes a great one too. Tide laundry detergent is a good one. A good pressure washer with a siphon pickup to add any detergent works wonders on a greasy engine. Andy, aka Chiro, cleaned his engine per Nate's advice and swears by it. I'm sure they will chime in.

I used Simple Green when I prepped mine to paint, it worked great. Ron

Carb cleaner for those last bits of clean up. Wire brush and scrape big buildup, oven cleaner, then degreaser. A POWERWASHER HELPS OUT ALSO.

    Degreasers

Actually there's a world of difference ~ the best is the basic stuff , look in Pep Boys , Shucks etc. for Gunk Engine Brite part # EB-1 and give it a sniff ~ now you'll know the good stuff regardless of brand . CRC is good and right now they give the bigger can for the same price .

AVOID the fancy-schmancy " steam " , or " foamy " type de-greasers as they all SUCK

DO NOT use carby cleaner , brake cleaner , oven cleaner etc. as those all damage rubber , plastic , paint , aluminum and worse , your _liver_ .

You'll need a good stiff solvent brush and a decent quality 2" paintbrush for the second cleanings .

Warm it up a bit (NOT hot) and spray on a can or two , it'll drip all over and make puddles , this is fine as you can use that to remove the oily spots on the driveway . work the old caked on grease around with the solvent brush , spray some de-greaser into the brush too or re-wet it from the puddle on the ground , it'll get dry as you go , not to worry , just dampen it a little bit as you get to that part , in time you'll have a sticky , gooey , nasty taffy like mess all over the truck , the ground and you and you'll be cursing my name . grab the hose you thoughtfully rigged out before anything else and begin by hosing down the driveway , get that stuff loose and running then wet the fenders and windshield so the crud flying off will not permanently stain the paint , hit the engine and be amazed at how the nasty crud that was all dry a moment ago , easily runs off ~ keep at it until the sheets of white water turn clear then go change your shirt and have a cold one , let it run off and dry a bit , now you can see the parts you missed , do them next time as any dampness will thwart re-tries right now . close the hood and spray rinse the paint , glass , fenders etc. , etc .

Be aware that the runnoff will kill the grass , the flowerbeds etc. so choose your workplace carefully , you sex life depends on it :)

I never _EVER_ do this when SWMBO is around , even when I'm @ her place! Women just don't get it and will be angry no matter how much cleaner the truck and the area is when you're all done .

Use a long sleeve shirt you don't care about as you'll never get it looking good again .

    I hope this helps....

Are we speaking from experience Nate? LOL Did the wife ever forgive you?
Thanks for the help. I have some Gunk stuff but it seems to leave an oily surface.

    Who , ME ?

Of COURSE not ! I am always covered in dirty grease spots ! :p

She didn't get over it , she left me and now I have a MUCH better woman in my life , I make sure to not make the same mistakes !

If you have an oily sheen , you didn't fully clean it or you didn't rinse correctly , remember : the hose must spray on ALL surfaces , it won't work by runoff .

It typically takes me three cleanings of a new toy before I can eat off it (or begin painting) . getting the _behind_ parts of things clean is tricky but do-able .

I've gotten the _topside_ of my newest klunker clean as a whistle but upon scrootching underneath it to-day whilst replacing the radiator , I see I have much work to do yet
