Classic case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Picked up a new speedo cable at the Carlise, PA swap meet last month because my OEM cable had a bend in it that made my speedo bounce a bit. Now, mind you, it was working with 60 y.o. parts and I decided to change it out to see if the bounce would go away. New cable lasted all of two miles and failed. The tip breaks off inside the bullet at the trans, jamming it up. Removed bullet and spent close to an hour CAREFULLY removing the broken particle trying not to damage the bullet. Install old cable and speedo does not work. turns out new cable was too long, jammed up the speedo itself which then proceeded to seize. I don't know who to be more pissed off at, myself or the manufacturer of the new cable. Now I gotta get my speedo rebuilt unless anybody has an extra one laying around. Andy
Not cool~ Lucky you getting to crawl up under your dash again! Wish I had an extra, but I only have the one.
Crappo Parts I hear you Evan ; Did GM (AC) finally stop making the speedo cables ? . There were the two basic lengths available that fit most everything from the 1930's up to the late 1980's....... I'm pulling my hair out right now because of low quality parts problems . A buddy of mine is doing lots and lots of 350 SBC conversions right now for the lazy guys who don't like working on their Oldies , he says almost 1/2 of the new water pumps come with the drive flange pressed on 1/4" to 1/2" off spec. .
Problem solved So I had another speedo that used to be in the truck but it began to squeal really loud so I swapped it out years ago for the one that just seized due to the repp speedo cable. Found it in my basement this morning and took a good look at it. Took it apart and lubed it and the squeal went away. Just swapped it into the truck with my OEM speedo cable which I also took apart and lubed up. All is well and the bouncing of the needle is all but eliminated. Then took my daughter in the truck with our bicycles to the bike path and biked down to the ocean beach and back. Speedo worked great and we had a really nice ride too. Happy Father's Day to me!!
