I have searched the internet for parts to rebuild a starter (54 6V, 235 ci motor). One company's catalog listed a rebuild kit of brushes, springs and brush holders, and bushings, but they only have the bushes. Classic, Jim Carter, LMC and the other usual folks only have brushes.

Where can i get the other parts?

    Uh , Oh ~

    NAPA'S ECHLIN book sez :

    Brushes # R500

    Spring # SP6

    Bushing , Commutator End # 4200

    C.E. Washer might be # WA100

    Bushing , Drive end # 4265

That's all they list in my early models book .

Nate, the local Napa only had the bushings. i ordered brushes from Chevy's of the 40s in Wash state. the new brushes were copper vice the carbon units currently in the starter. the overall brush length for the old carbon ones was almost the same as the new copper ones. I replaced the engagement end bushing because of the wear i could see in the bushing to shaft area. I also rewired per you suggestion. i'll give it a go when the rain stops.

O.K. , it's possible the old brushes were not overly worn .

New bushings really helps out as does cleaning the commutator but DO NOT try to undercut the mica between the copper commutator bars ! . that's _only_ for generators , never starters .

Some high temp. Moly (black) based grease should finish the job up nicely .
