Winter storm Leonard dumped a whopping 1 1/2 inches of snow on us this week, which , of course, shut most everything down. The school closings really cramped my schedule, I was supposed to paint in a middle school this week, now I will be doing that next week. Or the other hand, the 41 F**d is coming along at the metal shop and the Roadster Shop chassis should ship Monday.
Ya'll are killin' me. Now I know it's a regional thing but 1-1/2" of snow shuts everything down Just pretend you're "muddin" in a four wheeler, same concept, just alot cleaner. And they are naming winter storms now? When did they start doing that?
The problem is that we get lots of ice....it doesn't stay snow for long. I called Fatman first, they don't make a chassis for a 41. Roadster shop is the INLY one who does. Easy way to drop $20k.
Snowy weather Good morning Russ In an another thread the 1958 Chevy truck 4 Wheel drive is mentioned. A truck like that with front mounted snowplow would be of great help right ! I was reading your thread and had to laugh a bit. Thinking of you not working at the School and the alternative is working on that chassis is `nt to bad Understand the icy road conditions makes things more difficult offcourse ! But dont you have any communety trucks aquipet with snow plows in your county ? What about all year winter tires With or without spikes ? Here in Oppland county (norway) people are snowed inside in the higher regions, on our farm we have a 60 cm of snow and icy roads every day in winter season allmost 5 months. They have started using warmed up sand instead of salt on the Public roads. Life just goes on as normal. Local enterpreneurs clean the main highway roads and local farmers do the rest in my village. School kids walk by every day. Would love to see more of the work you do on that chassis and the art work at the School. Martinius.
Martinius, here in Indiana were I live, there are so many guys with snowplows on their trucks (including me) that it is hard to make any real money at it. Most don't charge enough to cover the true cost of the business. We have had a very cold and snowy winter this year. Salt is in short supply, many towns have run completely out of it. I'm in the trucking business, and have been told the Ohio river terminals are out-of or allocating salt. Then there is the US propane shortage, I have several truck owner-operators who work with me that are now hauling propane from Houston, Texas back to the midwest. I'm really ready for spring. I've got to go now, 2" new snow this morning and I have to clear the church parking lot before services this morning.
Thanks for your update Thanks for your update Steve.Sounds harsh to do a jobb under such conditions. I know about the condtions in your state at the moment , having contact with my famely allmost every week in OR and Minnesota , farmers most of them and they update me with the daily News. In a Place named Gjovik nearby here there is a famely owned factory Overaasen snowplows AS;http://www.overaasen.no/?sprak=2 where ingenieurs build the world largest snow plows and cleaner machines for raill-roads and airport purpose. They export to the US to. Now they have devellopped smaller sized road cleaners that brush the snow aside and spread hot sand behind them. Do you tow cars aswell, would be a good buisness in Winter time ? Thanks for telling me your story.
We don't get enough snow to warrant the plow trucks. They do now spray brine on the major roads....I'm not a big fan of the resulting car rot. Our climate is warm enough that often a snow is gone by mid day. If we get a big snow....a few inches is big here....it melts some during the day then freezes overnight and you get what they got in Atlanta. Black Ice. The school closings are due to the school busses, the shadiest, out of the way roads have to be completely passable for the busses to run, so they don't exclude or endanger any students from coming to school.
We've sure had our share of ice this winter. The craps been hanging around for the last two days. Streets are fine, but the sidewalks suck.
Inclement Weather Thanx for the pictures ! . In 1968 we bought an old 1949 Phillips 66 fuel oil truck and used it to deliver our own bulk fuel oil to the outlying buildings . 1.5 T (IIRC) Chevy with smoky old dipper 235 , it wheezed and rattled but *never* failed to start no matter how cold it was , this on 6 volts no less . Tough trucks to be sure . Martinus , if you bisect America East to West , the lower 1/2 doesn't really get a lot of snow & ice so they don't always have much snow removal equipment . Please everyone , BE CAREFUL OUT THERE ! .
Cool school closings Video A rather unorthodox video from a headmaster and director. Cool guys; http://www.abcnyheter.no/video/2014/02/14/slik-fortalte-de-elevene-skolen-var-snoestengt
On the rare occasions when we get ice or snow which is usuallu gone in three days or less I pull out pictures of our trip to my brothers funeral and count my blessings I don't live where it's the norm. Wife, her car, and the very top of a jacked up 4WD pickup.
The family homestead is actually near the tiny unincorperated burg of Rowena, South Dakota. My brother lived in far NW Iowa south of Worthington, MN. My other brother, also deceased, lived in Rosemount, MN when it was country and not a bedroom for the Twin Cities. I spent some of my youth around Savage and the girl I was madly in love with was of the Wolterman family near Fairfax which I think is in your neighborhood.
