Glad to be back on the job of working on the '51 3100 after some time away. I am now trying to install and located the cross pieces I need to support the bed. I found this posting https://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=20807&highlight=cross But I still need to know what cross rails, pieces etc I need. Does anyone have pictures and/or diagrams? The bed is apart and being sand blasted before painting but I have three U-shaped pieces that as I recall cross the back of the frame. Beyond that I'm a bit lost. I have what appears to be the front and center cross members that have the flange brackets. How are these installed? Do they mount to wood blacks that attach to the frame with long bolts? Here the rails I have- Thanks, Haasman
The cross members you have shown go side to side on top of hardwood blocks. The one without spot welded flats on it goes in the number two position, just forward of the "kick-up" in the frame. They take long carriage bolts through "offset" flat washers resessed in the wooden bed floor. I think I remember your truck is a 1950? They had 9 boards of varying width, I believe. Our host sells a little booklet on assembling truck beds, (part # 16-001)
Thanks Steve. I've just ordered the book. Great place to start. Hopefully it will provide enough info for me to start getting these pieces together.
bed photos I just refinished the wood again in my 1952 last week. Here's a photo of the truck without the wood. The rear support is out of the photo. Hope this helps. Richard
Thanks for the replies- so the U shaped pieces are above the frame with wood blocks, and under the blocks are the rubber pads? The pictures and links are very helpful. (This is what I get for waiting too long to restart this project). If anyone has pictures without the truck bed, that would be super helpful, since I also need to see how the spare tire carrier attaches. You guys have some beautiful trucks. Wow! Haasman
Thanks Larry. It does. Ideally I'd love to see bare frame with cross sills only, if someone has any illustrations or pictures. Haasman
Rubber pads under the wooden blocks- only the front wooden blocks get the rubber pads? Or do all the wooden blocks?
All 4 wood blocks get pads, plus the rear sill to bed frame. The picture you request is in your first post. The thread you linked shows a yellow gmc with 3 pictures attached The first pic shows the 4 blocks and all the cross rails.
Thanks Tubby- you are so right. The link didn't work for me for some reason, now it does. Just the kind of pictures I needed. Haasman
