Got a rare hole in the work schedule the other day and went to the Mecum auction at the state fairgrounds. Several AD trucks were for sale. Some sold, some did not reach reserve. Seemed to me altogether, about 55-60% did not sell. Alot of cars owned by old men who just "flip em" for profit. One 56 Chevy car went for $120,000. Had an Art Morrison GT Sport Chassis.
Thanks for sharing those Steve, I really liked all of em, the red one gave me ideas for mine seeing it was red to start with.
A few more... Nate, these caught my eye, they were as clean underneath as on top. And, Nate, you might also like these... And these were really cool too. Not really in to "swimming pool" blue, but the truck was well done.
Sweet ! All of those were auctioned off ? . Pic. # 8 , looks mighty nice to me , I love Task Force rigs and sorely miss my '55 3600 Tow Truck , a beater POC but it worked harder than a new Dodge Cummins.....
The only notes I took on these trucks are as follows, The brown one w/ orange wheels SOLD for,$47000. The 54 green one did NOT sell, bid ended at $28000. It had some problems. The red and blue ones in the same pic with the 54 SOLD. Red-$42000. Blue-$40000. The 56 SOLD, $35000. As I commented above, many cars and trucks did not sell, at least on the block. Maybe they did later, as most owners were around and could be negotiated with afterward. If any of you guys have never been to a Mecum auction, it cost $20 to get in just to look, but, it's like a "hands on" car show. Open the doors, open the hood, if you are a serious bidder, start em up with a Mecum rep. present. I saw really serious bidders test driving cars, (with the owner of course) around the fairgrounds.
Sweet rides! There were a lot of nice trucks in Indy! This one did not sell at $45,000. But what amazes me more is that this tractor fetched $46,000 in a previous Mecum auction this year! Wow! Charles, do you have one of these? Ken
Ken, I do not have any JD's, but I do like that Big rear window green on the did not sell for 45K. Makes miss my 65 when I see them.
Deer John That early tractor is historic and great looking. The cars and trucks are way above my Budget but they are beauifull each and one of them. I like the Brown one With the red engine much . Is that an LS engine ? Thank you for sharing Martinius.
Martinius, no, not an "LS" as it has a distributor. Can't remember what it was for sure, but, appears to be a small block with some sort of fuel injection kit on it. Centerbolt valve covers would make it the last of the gen. 2 small blocks, I believe. Nate, "gasp" is right, the guys that buy these vehicles are NOT motor-heads like us. They might be rightly called auto-enthusiasts, with a whole lot of money. Investors, mostly, with the goal to make a profit. Probably not many with any "wrench saavy". My son, who is 17, gets mad because he says they have taken all the COOL old cars out of his reach. He wants a "Bandit" Trans-am for some reason, but, can't afford it. He says, he will drive me around in my truck because by time it's done, Ill be to old to drive. Ken, the Mecum "gone farmin'" auctions are interesting but never fetch the total $ the car auctions bring in. I know several farmers around here that have large antique tractor collections. Thing is, whenever they go to pay for anything else, they are, well, "thrifty". I'm trying to be kind here.
