Advice is sought on how to remove and fix the drive or Propeller shaft on a 1953 1/2 Chevy truck. First I thought the differential had locked up but it seems more a problem in the propeller shaft (with no universal gear). The manuals I have don't help in terms of removing and fixing. I have the specs, etc. but need guidance on how to remove (do I have to take off the whole back axle off?) and fix. the original problem may have to do with lack of lubricant but right now can't get the truck to move at all since it is locked into not going. Advice and guidance, as well as suggestions for manuals, welcome. the manual I have doesn't seem to have the info needed. Thanks. Jim G
I have a 10 page manual My problem is loading it to send to you. The manual was provided by Patrick Dykes out of Casa Grande, AZ. Patrick's Antique Cars and Trucks. 3.55:1 Ring and Pinion bolt in instructions for '40 to '54 GMC/Chevrolet 1/2 ton. As soon as I get the logistics figured out (not computer literate) I'll send to you. The problem iI have had over the 34 years that I owned the truck was the carrier bearing coming part. I lost two of them in two different rear ends. If you tear it down you have to be real careful not to bend the shims up. You also need a dial indicator to set the rearend up.
You can save $100 by buying the 3.55:1 ring & pinion gears here... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-55-1-ring-pinion-gears.923013/#post-10619040 Back on topic.... "Sweet" did a great tech article here on the rear end rebuild....here..... http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/axles/355 gear swap/

drive shaft, etc. Gary: thanks for downloading and sending the document. Now I am waiting for my printer to print out the pages. Patience. Any other advice will be appreciated. Best. Jim G
drive shaft Yes Gary. Got the manual but haven't done any work yet on the 53 chevy. I just hope it is not something big. We will see. Again thanks. Jim G
