I purchased a 235 block with serial numbers for a 54 year engine and it didn't have a pan. I bought a pan off evilbay for a so called 54 235. The quandry is that the bolt holes don't line up on one side due to a slight bulge or bump out in the pan side I guess. The pan I have has straight sides. I looked at a couple listings for a later 58-62 pan and it looks like the right one with the slight curve in the bolt pattern. Was there a difference in car and truck 235 engines and I have a car pan? How can a 54 engine need a 58-62 pan?
    Any help would be appreciated.

The 1955.2 - 1962 oil pan had the hump on one side.

1954 was the only year that used the straight sided pan for the full pressure 235's & they are tough to find.

1947-1953 also used the straight sided pan but those had the dipper tube trough system in them.

I have a few extra 1954 only oil pans .... shoot me a PM

    Oil Pan Quandry

DZ, I'm not sure I understand it all but I'll send you a PM. I need one of the pans with the bump side. I can't figure out how a 54 engine has the curved pattern when it was 55.2 to 62 that used these pans. Anyway thanks for responding.

The curved pans were only used on the '55-'62 motors which means you do not have a '54 engine block.

    Pan Problem

I'll get some numbers and see what I can find out. I agree that something doesn't add up with this engine.

    Quandary Solved!

Okay, DZ you were right. Here's the deal. The engine number on the block at the back of the dizzy is FOI05J. I asked for help on the forum and some one told me it was a 55 based on this number. The "O" and "I" confused me but someone said they sometimes used the "O" for 0 and the "I" for the 1. I did a lot of research last night and found that the later (post 55) engines no longer used production numbers but changed to this format: F (plant)= Flint O1 (month)=Jan 05 (Day)=5th J (Alpha code)= standard 235 Thriftmaster. So in that the number didn't tell me anything about the year I went to the engine casting number 3769716 Which shows up in the later parts and accessory manuals as a 60-61 235 6 cyl block. So then I decided to see if the head and flywheel matched up and the head (3836848 cast) is listed for several years and is consistent for 53-62 for passenger and all corvette. The flywheel (3705410 cast) also lists for 55-62 235 6 cyl. SO the answer is I have a 60-61 235. Now all I need is a pan and some valve train parts and a way to figure out if it's hydraulic or mechanical cam. :D
