Gas Gauge

    Whats the best way to test your gas gauge without inserting it into the tanks???Just hook it up and try???

    if you're thinking about the sending unit, attach both leads of an ohm-meter to it...one lead on any metal part, the other lead to the post, where the gauge wire attaches.

    position the meter to RX1, and move the float arm. you will see a variable reading, from 0-30, or 0-90 or 0-whatever, depending on the sender.

    as long as the meter's needle sweeps steadily, the sender is good.

    now...if you're talking about your gas gauge, just connect the hot lead, to where it belongs on the gauge, touch the ground lead of the battery with one hand, and pinch any metal part of the gauge, with your other hand.

    your body will act as a resistor. the harder you pinch, the stronger the gauge's reading.

    same deal; if you have a steady sweep, the gauge is good.
