2wd to 4wd tranny swap

    I'm trying to find out the various scenerios possible when putting a tranny from a 2wd on a 4wd. I have an '87 3/4 ton 4wd with a blown tranny and am considering buying a 2wd parts truck. The 350 in the 4wd is down a cylinder, so I'm considering an engine and tranny swap from either another 350 or 454 from a 2wd. I'd appreciate any warnings you could give me, so I don't end up needing a different t-case, shorter drive shaft, etc.

    I may be wrong, but wouldn't your output shafts be different on a 2wd model?

    I don't deal with 4x4's much, but I don't think it would hurt to put a 2wd on a 4wd as long as the tailshaft's are the same length. If you go with the 454, I assume it will have a TH400 with it, I would make sure that your transfer case can handle the torque or you'll end up having to replace it too. Hope this helps.

    you would have to open up the 2wd trans to change the output shaft you might also need a different length drive shaft also you will have to change the output shaft on your transfer case to match up with the beefier th400 (it is bigger and has more splines

    oops I notice you said 87' truck you probably have a 700r4 trans. some older trucks around have opposite side transfer case watch out for that. but both output shafts will probably have to be changed but well worth putting a 454 and th400 in your 4X4 but you will lose the overdrive

    if you are gonna change t cases try to stick with either np205 or 241 t-cases avoid 203 and 208 you would be better off with rubber bands in a big truck

    It depends on how much off-roading you'r gonna do. If you are not gonna do very much, then the NP208 is the way to go, since it has a lighter weight (although it is weaker) and a lower gearing than an NP205. I've never had a problem out of my 208, and I use four wheel drive at least once a month.
