Starter problems

    I put a rebuilt 355 in 81 pickup and can't get starter to line up. Do I need to pull engine to make it work or can it be done right without pulling engine. Tired of messing with starters!!!

    the first thing to do is make sure you have the right starter for the engine and the transmission. if you have the right one, have you tried shimming it?

    you should be able to align it with the motor still in the truck.

    I feel your pain. I had to put my starter back on Wednesday, and it got heavy...QUICK!! You should be able to get it lined up with the motor in the truck, you may need to shim it, but it can be done. If chevrolet would have made them where you had to remove the motor to get the starter, I'd have switched to Ford a long time ago. Well, maybe Dodge, I'm not ready for that radical a change yet. :)
