I am in the process of changing the rear main seal in my 1957 265 v8 and I can't get the old style rope gasket in and don't know if there is a rubber one to go in it, The tool I got to install the rope gasket keeps popping off about half way in. Any help or advise would be great.

I had to install a rope seal in my GMC 305 V6. They recommend Grease in the instructions. Creates a seal and I assume helps it slide in. It Is a pain in the rear, They tend to come Oval shaped so I found that installing it with the narrower part of the oval shape in the groove aided.
