Successfully removed both throttle and choke cables. What is the purpose of the throttle knob? Mine is spring loaded I can rev engine and then it goes back to normal, much like depressing accelerator. Denis

Mine wasn't spring loaded. I say wasn't because I removed it and repositioned the choke cable to the lower hole to make more room for the electric wiper motor I installed shortly after acquiring my GMC. The first 1/2" or so of choke cable pull on my Carter YF carb (not stock) just increases throttle opening without actually starting to close the choke butterfly.

Often used for warm up on cold mornings and to check generator output. It should NOT go back in by itself. Have used hammer and dolly to CAREFULLY flatten the cable housing in one small spot till correct drag on the cable is obtained.
