Hi All. I am installing my spindle nuts on the front of my 51 3/4 ton. Not sure how hard to tighten the castle nut before inserting the cotter pin. I have misplaced my service manual (or my ex wife is lining her bird cage with it). Any help really appreciated! Ed
What I do is spin the wheel while tightening it. Once it gets to where the wheel almost stops, back it off to where the pin fits. I’m sure there is some actual torque listed somewhere however.
'51 GMC Maintenance Manual says to remove the tire & wheel, cap and cotter pin, then tighten nut to 33 ft/lb. Now back off nut at least one, but not more than 2 opportunities (no more than 1 "flat" total, ie 1/6 of a turn) to drop the cotter pin back through the nut and spindle. Remember that the spindle has two holes for the cotter pin, one vertical and one horizontal. This assumes BALL bearings, not an upgrade to roller bearings which will die a quick death if run this tight. Ask me how I know.
