Hi All, Just had my carb rebuilt (Carter W-1) and am a bit perplexed about how the throttle cable wire attaches. I know that the cable sleeve gets secured in the clamp (where the pencil is) but not sure where the wire that slides in the sleeve attaches. If anyone has a picture that would be greatly appreciated!! Ed
There's a little cylindrical thing with a screw in the side f it called a "Barrel Clamp" ~ it slides up the end of the wire and the screw holds it into place . Remember to leave a 1/8" ~ 1/4" gap between the barrel clamp and the linkage it touches on . I've had good luck finding these clamps at ordinary hardware stores, the employees never know what it is, you have to search the little draweres of hardware / lawn mower parts diligently . Here's an image : https://www.amazon.com/ADJUSTABLE-D...&qid=1531079944&sr=1-21&keywords=barrel+clamp
Hey, thanks a bunch Nate!! I really appreciate your help (again!) I appreciate the link. Does the barrel clamp attach somehow to that pivot arm at the very bottom (the one with the hole for the carb linkage?) Thanks again, Ed
No ; It holds on the end of the wire and when you pull the knob, the cable lifts it up against the throttle linkage, why it's so important o leave a larger gap than you think is necessary . The correct, original one has the wire go through the meddle of the cylinder and the screw goes in the side ~ it's kinda snug clearance there so take the time to find the correct one . Lawn mower shops should have these by the dozen .
Sort of like this : Barrel-Type Kart Accelerator Cable Clamp Righetti Ridolfi #K121A - 4 PIECES | eBay The original one has a rounded bullet nose on the end that goes up against the throttle linkage so it works smoothly . Good luck hunting 1 . Maybe Briggs & Stratton ? .
Smaller but still not the right one : ADJUSTABLE CABLE BARREL CLAMP THROTTLE GAS CLUTCH MOTORBIKE MOTORCYCLE NIPPLE | eBay
You're welcome . This important bit always get dropped or discarded . Remember : my advice is free and worth less than you pay for it .
Hahah! BTW, what is the purpose of the throttle knob anyway? I understand why there is a choke knob but the throttle knob has always baffled me a bit. Can't I just stomp on the gas pedal?
Yes, you can ; The throttle control is correctly used to raise the idle speeds to prevent stalling, you're only supposed to use the choke to start the engine . It must never, EVER be used to maintain road speed ! .
Let me know if you cannot find one, I spent over an hour looking OnLine yesterday, no dice . I'm retired and bored in this 108* F heat so maybe I'll avoid actually working on my new Moto and go look for one if you can't find one locally . Anything to avoid going out into the no air conditioned back yard with my tools and greasy old broken machines .
Yeah, I have heard that So Cal is roasting. My buddy lives in Pasadena too and cant remember it being so hot. Thanks for the offer; I was going to swing by a small motor repair shop after work to see if I can have any luck. If no luck, I may just take you up on your offer !!
Okey-Doke ~ keep me posted . I'm hiding out in McDonald's.......80 + degrees in here, better than out side where I was working this morning .
The old VWs had this barrel nut on the throttle cable and heater box My old Piper had one of these on the carb heat airbox. Used to call them bug nuts. Not sure what the proper name is
Did you try these guys? THE CARBURETOR SHOP / Carter Chevrolet W-1 carburetors Does it look like this?
Yes ! . The rounded end is supposed to face UP . Now you know what to look for at the Hardware Store or Lawnmower Shop .
That picture is a Carter carb on a Ford Flathead. OP might expand the search to include some of the Ford suppliers. That website looks like they know a lot about the W 1 Carter so I'd start there though
