I own a '79 C-30 Camper Special with a 454 and a T400. I have recently reassembled the motor and when I went to reset the timing the manual says that there are 2 454's available in '79. One is set at 8 degrees BTDC and the other is 4 degrees BTDC. Unfortunately I have no idea which motor I have and I have 2 publications but neither describe how to identify either motor. Can anyone help..??

    Cheers,

    Bob

Do the books you have tell you the letter of each engine available? Such as: 454M, or 454L, etc...
If the engine is original you will be able to tell by looking at the VIN on the truck. If they are not original you will have to get the serial number off the engine block and have it researched. The book should tell you where this number is. And most good engine machining shops, head shops, or rebuilding shops should have the ability to research that for you.

set your timing at 4deg. or during heavy pulling you could have high temp problems.
