The dash lights are supposed to come on with the headlight switch. I'd think it would be one of 3 things: 1. the lights may be burned out, which you can find at any auto parts store. 2. The lamp sockets may have gone bad, I think Chevy Duty sells them. 3. Or the circuitry behind the guage cluster may be going bad, CD also sells that.. A few of my dash lights don't turn on because of those problems. :+

One other thing you might like to try for better guage illumination is to spray paint the back plate of the guage cluster chrome (making sure to tape up all the gauge contacts and lamp sockets) and also the blue side of the black/blue reflector that goes between the gauges and the clear plastic. I did this on my truck and I'm glad I did :) I can't remember the website that told me how to do it though. :-(

If the dimmer doesn't work it's probably the switch. the only other thing I might consider for it still wont turn on all the time is loose/damaged wires, but those are easy enough to check for if you replace the switch.

Sounds like you need a new headlight switch.
