1950 GMC 150 project

    just getting started on my 1950 3/4 ton. The original engine was replaced with a 292 that needs rebuilt. Other than that its pretty much all there.
    Looking for any and all suggestions. Looking to improve the drivability

    Depends on your definition of drivability. Your truck will be equipped with a 4.57:1 rear gear (5.14 was an option), so highway speeds are out.

    Tell me more. I'm interested in a frame swap as that seems to be what allot of people are doing. My concern is that this being a 3/4 ton am I in over my head cuz most references for a frame swap are for half ton pickups.

    The 292CID i6 engine is a modern thin wall design that's powerful and long living ~ before you get buried in chassis swaps, make it run and DRIVE it ~ you may find it has good driveabilty now ~ what transmission does it have behind the 292 ? .

    Need more information. A 292 has the same bell housing bolt pattern that was used from a 153 four cylinder to a 454 big block. Any standard or automatic will bolt up including all the overdrives. This is true up to when GM come out with the 60 degree V6. The easiest OD automatics are the 700R4 for heavy duty or the 2004R for light duty. The Borgwarner 3sp overdrive is a bolt up as is the NV3500 (hydraulic TO bearing) as is the T5. If you get the 33% OD with any of these it gives a 3.05 final with a 4.57 rear or a 3.44 final with a 5.14; both good for highway speeds.

    Pay very, very close attention to what Evan says, he's been at this longer and better than most .
