Hello, so I am a 16 year old kid and have recently started working on my grandfathers 1954 and 1952 Chevy 1700s. And I’m currently trying to find out the engines of each as I can’t seem to find any engine or head numbers. On the 52’ it has the part numbers “638153” and “248” on it and no websites or forums I’ve looked at seem to have them. The 54’ though has the numbers “270920597”, “56”, and “199”. Again no forums or anything have these numbers on them. If any of y’all know what they mean then the help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know what a Chevy 1700 is (Canadian maybe??), but it sounds to me like those are GMC engines. If the "270" number is found in this location, definitely is a 270 cubic inch GMC.

If the 248 number is in the same place, it is a 248 cubic inch GMC. If no more digits behind the 248, it is a factory service replacement engine.

In any case, welcome to the forum.

Yeah that’s actually what it is thank you so much. And the 1700 is Canadian, it’s just a 6000 rebranded.
