All, I’m looking for a conversion column for my 54 Chevy truck. Any alternatives out there that could get the job done?
If what you mean by "conversions column" is something that will connect to a rack and pinion with a universal joint, then almost any older GM column can be shortened to fit. You simply cut the column to length and use something called a "column saver" to support the shaft - you just need to make sure whatever junkyard column you use has the same diameter of the column saver bearing and will fit the support in the cab. The steering shaft itself is cut to length and a "D" ground on it to fit a common steering u-joint Here's a column saver in a shortened 57 or 58 Cadillac with the shaft shortened and a "D" ground into the shaft. (You'll want to pin it with a bolt or grub screw) Alternatively, you can make your own column with steel tube and any GM 50-60-70s non-tilt steering shaft. If you want the horn retained, you can buy the upper bearing support for a car with a horn from Chevs of the 40s. Use a regular roller bearing or a column saver for the other side..
