Hi all. I'm currently trying to install the vent window assembly on a 54 truck and it's not going well. Once I get the side window glass in place I can't get the vent window assembly to fit over the edge of the side glass and slide down in position. I know that it has to be worked into position but I haven't been able to do that. I started this project many, many years ago so I don't remember what I did to disassemble it. I'm looking for any advice or tips or pictures or videos that would help. Thanks

    Hoo boy.
I just did this a few months back. Both sides! Yikes:eek:. I had been dreading it since I got the truck in 2012. I've had an OEM replacement side glass for the passenger door for nearly as long. I painted that door to match the rest of the truck and dissasembled it prior to painting.

First...do you have a shop manual? The procedure is clearly outlined in the manual. It doesn't make the job any easier though. Lol. Second, I think Ol' Chebby might have a thread in his "how-to's", although I found the shop manual more helpful.

Re-install is a real PIA. There's no easy way around it. IIRC, it took lots of wiggling and wrangling of the side glass and vent window assembly for sure. Small, incremental height adjustments and tilting of the side glass were needed until the vent assembly eventually just slipped into place. Be patient and it will go in. Apply anti-seize to the bolt at the hard-to-access lower window channel mount. Heck, it's damn near impossible to access it! You may never take it out again but if you need to, you'll be happy you did. There was a hole cut into the driver door for a PO speaker install that made access to that bolt a snap and I actually had to cut a section out of the passenger door to get the bolt out on that side. Made for another project welding it back in place and metal finishing it.

Definately not a fun project. Good luck.

I don't have a shop manual so I just ordered one. I have wiggled and waggled and everything else I could think of and it hasn't gone into place yet. I'm getting frustrated because I don't want to damage the new paint. I'll take a look at the manual when I get it and see if maybe I'm missing some step. I certainly appreciate the advice and encouragement. Thanks Andy.

    Bill,
You should probably grab the factory assembly manual as well. It is extremely helpful.
