My buddy and I have a friendly disagreement about who's truck will have the highest top end (speed).

    My truck is a 1985 C20 350cu Q-jet carb 400 tranny 4.10 rear engine is bored 30 over.

    His truck is a 1981 F150 302cu 2bbl carb AOD (.70 over drive)transmission 3.25 rear.

My thinking is of course that my truck will have the advantage due to the larger engine.

My buddy thinks my truck will over rev due to the 4.10 rear and thus limit my top speed were as with his truck with the automatic over drive tranny and 3.25 rear will top out at a much higher speed because of the higher gearing.

Any input will be appreciated,as we would like to settle this

    Jeff-

I am by no means an expert, but here's what I see. The 302 and 350 are going to run at pretty much the same RPM's. From my point of view, the Ford 302 and Chevy 350 in stock form are pretty much equal as far as performance. You have a 4 barrel, which will mean more power, plus the lower rear end means quicker off the line. But, that also means you will hit your top RPM's quicker. The higher rear end ratio in the Ford means a higher top speed, based on the engines running at the same RPM's. So, as I see it, you would take him in the 1/4 mile, but he would get you in a road race. Try both, and post the results!! LOL:)

    Hi Tim,thanks for answering.

What a terrific idea! I discussed your idea with my buddy and he wants to give it a try!

We are both off on Friday and will have our little "race" then.

I will post the results Friday afternoon or evening.

    Thanks again,
    Jeff
