    Go off the VIN, 10th digit (second to last letter)
    B = 81, C = 82, D = 83, etc.

    If you are like the most of us here (I am guessing) it won't really be either before to long... Lets see, my front axle is from a 76 my rear axle is from a 73 my doors are from an 85 the engine is from ??? but it is not the original, the steering collum is from an 87 the tranny and transfer case are out of a 73 etc... the important thing is the condition of the parts and if they fit right there is a whole mess of things that will fit from 73 to 87, The hood will not swap from 80 and later to 81 and newer, and I am sure there are other things that will not fit or that will have minor changes (the direction of the turn signal on the front fenders) but these type trucks are easy to find parts for, have fun with it...

    1981 was the first year in this body style to have the 4 headlamp set up, also another way to tell if it's a 81 or 82 is the parking lamps in the front bumper...dead give away.
